How many days till PAX, guys? I forgot again, and I want to put Handsome Jack's face on my Spy loadout. :v:
It's March 22-24 according to that site.
I pretty much said this earlier.
Oculus Rift needed to be more "google glass" for its devkits and less rift.
Right now they're failing to do a lot of development because consumers are buying up the kits away from developers. Tying a tf2 promo to it just made rift a bust for a lot of pre-development work.
What they should have done was bundle the CONSUMER version of the rift with codes or at least tell us right now that they're going to include codes with the consumer version and distribute the current codes as untradable unique items right now.
Not that people like sunspy would care, they just want to get the item no matter what.
Shit, I actually didn't think of it this way. While promoting the Oc Rift by integrating support for it for a game like TF2, a still popular game, and offering an incentive (hat) for buying one, this pulls a lot away from the developer crowd that want to use them and instead puts a lot on the consumer, despite these kits being development kits. While it'll earn them the financial support, I too fear this'll leave a small crevice for dev support.
However, perhaps the financial support will make way to make more or something? Iunno. I'd rather wait for a consumer version.
$300 is a steep price for entry. If they're willing to pay that much for what we're arguing is solely the TF2VRH, then it was a lost fight to begin with.
If they (whoever "they" is, in this case, the potential purchaser of the Rift) were tentative on a few factors, but still interested in the Oculus Rift, say, more so than your average consumer, and the TF2 tie-in was the tipping point, then it still really doesn't matter; the Oculus Rift is going to someone who will use it and hopefully further their interest in the field.
Of course, we will have the handful of people who will get the dev kit and make magnificent work with it, influenced by the TF2 update or not.
tl;dr if you were really interested in the Oculus Rift you would have backed it before and probably followed its development more closely. if you are going to spend $300 solely for the hat then it really doesn't fucking matter
TF2's unoptimization is more in the CPU area than GPU
though there are some really terrible particles like the amputator and buff rings that are overdraw central
That's only because TF2 uses the CPU a hell of a lot more than it uses the GPU. It would probably do better if the engine did take more advantage of the user's GPU.

Sanvich - $30, sells for $300.
Rift - $300, sells for ?
I'm sure that some people will be able to justify that investment.

It is marked as completely non-tradable.
The hilarious part is that the hat's probably going to be untradeable
Not only that, but if you read the news on the OculusVR homepage, you'll see that every single backer of the kickstarter project will get one. (That is, if they have a Steam account of course)
For those who are too lazy to check, it has ~9500 backers.
So it's probably not gonna be HOUWAR type rarity, more like Max's head. And the preorder bonus ends on April 1st, so be quick if you want one.
(But, judging from how retarded the TF2 community is, it'll still be worth a fortune (if it is tradeable that is))
On a more serious note, why the hell does Oculus even do/allow this?
If it's supposed to be a development kit for DEVELOPERS, why advertise it to those consumers whose sole reason for purchasing real items is getting the fucking hat?
It is marked as completely non-tradable.
The Ultimate Evil in Trading History, TF001. The most expensive promo in TF2 history that will never be tradeable...

Saxxy - free. Got offered: $13'000.
And I can't see a real point in buying Oculus Rift now. I would buy better and cheaper version later, but buying something unfinished just for hat... That's an overkill for me. Anyway - if you will be tired of this helmet you will have that helmet not shining. And now you look the same as $10 baker.
I'm more interested in the long-term health consequences of VR gaming. Having 2 big screens that close to the eyes cant be good and prolonged gaming will probably induce migraines.

How fast-paced life should be that weather patterns and children harm your eyes?
Any particular reason that keys are now worth 4 ref when just a few months ago it was like, 2.66?

halloween unusuals
Garish lime and pink hats already harm my eyes, they can probably take another hit for the team.
Any particular reason that keys are now worth 4 ref when just a few months ago it was like, 2.66?
No.
It's been cited that the community market is the reason, claiming it's greatly lowering the amount of available keys while the amount of refined floating around continues to climb and climb. tf2wh doesn't accept metal any more, I heard, so it's slowly losing any real strength as a currency for anything beyond mid-range hats.
I still think there's some kind of price fixing going on though.

actually being close to screens does not affect your vision
... But aren't there like, billions of Keys due to scammed accounts? That doesn't make any sense, especially a jump of nearly 2x.

Technically, there's an unlimited amount of keys, due to the store.

1. Someone sees price at Backpack.tf at 2.66 ref and sells his Key on Outpost.
2. Outpost sellers buy them all at 2.66 ref
3. Outpost sellers post trades of 2.77 ref and successfully sell all
4. Backpack.tf records it as evidence and raises suggested price to 2.77 ref
5. Outpost sellers tries to sell at 2.88 AND Someone sees price at Backpack.tf at 2.77 ref and sells his Key.
8. Outpost sellers buy all available ones at 2.77 ref
9. Outpost sellers post trades of 2.88 ref and successfully sell all
10. Backpack.tf records it as evidence and raises suggested price to 3 ref

I just, fuck I just want my damn Sleeping Dogs set. I can live happy once I do, biggest pre-order regret ever, and I need to feel clean. That, and I feel naked not having all of the stat-based weapons
Just three keys worth of stuff away.

doesn't help that there's nothing good to do with metal.
the only use I can think of is getting a low-number on a new item.
Anyone complaining about Valve adding an incentive for a consumer to adopt a dev kit early, saying 'it's 4 devs oh noes' Is really not seeing the bigger picture.
Valve, as always, are taking this technology further than anyone else, by trying to get a group of it's players to buy kits, so they can TEST Valves various attempts at integrating the technology. What's better than a game studio developing with in-house kits? A game studio that has a large group of players to TEST what they build, and feed back to them about the experience.
Yes, there will be people that bought it for the hat. No, not everyone who has one of these Devkits is going to use it to make their own game, but every single TF2 player that has one, will be testing and feeding back to valve, to make your eventual consumer experience even more worthwhile.
Why do you always have to see the negative side of the story?
doesn't help that there's nothing good to do with metal.

Because nobody wants to buy keys for 4 refined so its just less useful
man who even cares let the rich kids waste their money on the VR goggles
it'll be worth it to see them start bitching when the consumer versions come out and they're like 100 bucks and still come with the hat
What am I even supposed to do with metal? It's not like craft hats are nearly worth as much, so you can't really make anything worth trading.
