Do you assume players with hats = expert of that class
Somewhat, but I go off this train of thought
Guy gets a hat, he starts to play that class alot so he can show the hat off, he's getting better as he shows of to the point he's pretty good at that class.
That's how I see it anyway
On the other side of the coin I admit if I see you wearing a gibus I assume you're a idiot and ignore you for the most part
I started playing Heavy a lot more once I got the Hound Dog.
You look up on people with hats because you are poor and irish.
You think that frightens you, you should see me jumping out with my sparkly one
It should be on fire. That'd be waaaaaaaaaay scarier.
Actually, now that I kinda think about it, it's the other way around, people with hats think players without hats are crap at their class...
You have a better chance of getting hats if you've played since 07.
You also have a better chance of having a high skill if you've played since 07.
How do you have a better chance of getting hats if you've played since 07?
I used to think this way but I don't now that I have more hats than the average player.
Also, maybe someone who got a hat for a class decided to play more as the class, getting better as a result.
Hats make you feel more confident and wearing them makes the poor and Irish rage at you. Which means you only seem a lot better player.
tl:dr --> It's just an illusion, guys!
Dammit, stop shittin' on the Irish :argh:
How do you have a better chance of getting hats if you've played since 07?
Well hats released somewhere in 09 i think. What i meant was, more playtime = more chance of getting a hat.
Dr.Obvious out.
Also, people who get a hat for a certain class may be more inclined to play that class, and thus, get better with them.

I apoligize if I did hurt you with my words, sir. I will not shit on the Irish anymore... which means more shit for the poor
Nope. I have first hand experience and I know better.
I have hats for some classes that I'm really, really, atrociously bad with.
I'm good with medic put look at me :S one scoot hat and two heavy hats :3:

A hat suggests that the person has been around a while because they are so rare, so yes.
There is a level of intimidation for sure.
But I think it's more due to visual association - if you've ever been constantly dominated by a highly skilled soldier who just happened to have wearing a hat, you begin to remember to watch out for the soldier with the hat... especially hats being one of the few things that can be used to tell enemy players apart. After a while you might see the hat on another server and be subconsciously reminded to watch out for that one.
I think that most people who play with hats are just playing that class to show everyone that they have found a new hat.
So no, I think it is nothing skill related whatsoever.

And if I were to think about it rationally, then I would obviously have to agree, but there's just something in the back of my head that screams "skilled player". Just like a crown would scream "royalty".
Ever since I got my Pyro's Beanie, people suddenly started to Uber me more frequently as pyro.
Coincidence? I don't think so.
Hats also let you identify how long the player owns and plays the game, you'd have to be incredibly lucky to get a hat after only 2 or 3 weeks.
I recently found a Texas Ten Gallon so I did what every normal person would do when they found one. I changed my name to Hank Hill the Engineer, joined a random clan server, and built me up a nice sentry/dispenser nest whilst at random moments and trademark situations (ie: getting backstabbed by a stab = BWAHHHAHAHAHHHH, getting sentry/dispenser farm destroyed = DAMN IT BOBBY, someone dominating me = I'M GONNA KICK YOUR ASS, when we won a round = KOTH theme song especially if it was on KOTH mode, lose a round = LOSERS, YOU'RE A LOSER, ARE YOU FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF?, etc). When I was on Red I found another Engineer who had a ten gallon and I PM'd him to change his name to Bobby Hill the Engineer so we had a fun time building sentry nests next to ours and when ever Bobby got his sentry farm destroyed I'd do the DAMN IT BOBBY sound and it was A++ entertainment. It was fun until one of the admins decided to permaban me for not playing seriously
:saddowns:
Just an example of why I think hats don't show your particular skill level but can be downright fun if you know how to use them.
Depending on what hat they are wearing. People wearing Gibus usually tend to be bad players. Same with the Halo.
Heh with me and hats if the hat is good enough then I will make myself an expert at said class. Just for shits and giggles.
If you play more, you have more chances of getting a hat. Most players with hats have played a long time, and thus are more experienced.
It's still just a chance. You may also find players with hats that are simply lucky, but most of them have played a lot already.
I guess i'm one of the lucky ones cause i got all the scout hats and a couple of spy ones through drops, none of them were crafted.
Both scout and spy are my top classes and i consider myself to be pretty damn good at both of em.
Same with the rest of the guys i know they have a number of hats for their favorite classes.
I have 3 hats. The only way they effected me was when I got demofro(first hat, least played class, worst at it) so I tried demo for a week and learned the way of a Scottish man.

Can I please have the hank hill .wav's?
I will suck your pen0r forever.
Almost 400 hours and only 1 dropped hat.
I don't think they're better, but people who are really fucking good at their class usually have a hat for it because they've crafted a few from several hours of play or found one for it.
Hats just make it easier for me to distinguish players on my team and the oponents team.
