How about nothing.
Cool, was just chatting with the creator of the Indie game Monaco is Mine (http://www.pocketwatchgames.com/Monaco/ http://store.steampowered.com/app/113020/) and he said they were working on sorting out some TF2 promos, the lead artist looks to be taking care of it but they are interesting in community crowd sourcing it if they have time.
Not exactly major news but breaking news all the same

Looking at it, I don't think it'd be easy to make something that resembles that game to fit in with TF2.
unless Pixel-Balloons and badges is what happens.

Nevermind I see the link.

Seeing as the game is a top-down stealth/action game. Who better to give items to than the stealth/action class?
Monaco sports a few mechanics that can assist in stealth: hacking a computer system with a virus in order to disable security, disguises to fool guards, tranquilizer darts, and smoke bombs. If a game with such a minimalist design in presentation is to fit into a world such as that of TF2's, it must instead of transposing it's appearance, to instead transpose it's functionalists.
From the list I presented just above, tranquilizer darts and smoke bombs are 2 prime candidates for functional promotional items that still represent the source game that they're intended to promote. The weapons themselves can then take a freeform style, and be specifically designed to fit into TF2's artistic aesthetics instead of trying to shoehorn a specific style.
Cosmetics aren't the only way to do promos. RIFT, Quake, Deus Ex, Sleeping Dogs, Shogun, and WETA have all shown that promos with stats are generally well-received, provided that the TF team is willing to go the extra mile to make them fit instead of relying on artists attempting to make a style that is drastically different from TF2's to fit into TF2.
I don't think even if the Monaco devs were to approach them tomorrow with, 'hey, lets make a promo weapon with stats' that they would have enough time to test it, unless M$ pushes the XLIG release back by a fair bit after the successful cert as they're looking to have a simultaneous release on both platforms
All the promos you've all shown are terrible.
Don't expect weapons so I'll list cosmetic ideas instead.
Sniper rock-launcher as a pocket item to replace the jacket bullets.
A trophy belt with feathers of every angry bird color.
2 sticks of green bacon for the engineer as a pocket item.
A feather in the badge slot.
This isn't about being exciting, this is about mitigating the rape of angry birds on tf2.
I realize why I wouldn't be able to work at valve now, I care about the game too much :V

These kinds of things generally will be far in advance in order to make sure that the TF team has time to fit it into their schedule.
If push comes to shove, a persistent promo, much like the Ellis Cap and Frying Pan, would be optimal, as it'd allow for them to skirt around the deadline that was the release date of the game the promo was for.
from what I heard, the Sleepy Dawgs promo took like 4-6 months

More Soldier weapons confirmed...
Speaking of stealth, What happened to that Ninja game that had some tf2 characters in some artwork, I thought it was getting TF2 promos?

Perhaps.... a spy watch... that ISN'T a reskin of vanilla? :v:
Weapons could also always be reskins. That's fine.
Weapons could also always be reskins. That's fine.
As long as they are not All-Class melee weapons. Then everyone will get mad for whatever reason.
I would prefer the least amount of weapon reskins in the game as possible, if they don't obviously look similar to the existing item with those stats at least

9:52 PM - theharribokid: also your gameplay ideas sound like some of the hardest things to implement well
9:53 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: smokebomb: instant cloaking that leaves a large cloud, flicker resistance for the first 2 seconds of cloaking, long decloak time
9:53 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: so hard
9:55 PM - [FAUCᴱT] Psychopath: maybe with a loud 'tphoo' sound to mimic the sound of the smokebomb detonating
Didn't Advanced Weaponizer do something like that once? Some kind of spy knife that caused a big cloud to smoke to appear along with instantly cloaking you or something (I never played much on AW so idk).
Pretty sure it was so poorly implemented though that the puff of smoke would only appear once in a blue moon or something. Kinda made the item really not worthwhile.

Could use the sound from Dota 2 when Riki uses smokebomb. Sounds really awesome.

There's also a bunch of weapon ideas from that tightrope thing that are actually really creative.
And what's with the hate on reskins? Sometimes I'd like to use a weapon for how it looks but can't cause I don't like the stats.
from what I heard, the Sleepy Dawgs promo took like 4-6 months
well it's not the only thing
well it's not the only thing
Oh? Which other items took you guys that long to ship?
I was under the impression that the Sleep Dogs promos pretty much overtopped everything else released in terms of production time.
And what's with the hate on reskins? Sometimes I'd like to use a weapon for how it looks but can't cause I don't like the stats.
They basically mean you have to memorize more items. TF2 has tens of unlocks, which all do separate things, and new players have trouble learning them all. Imagine when they find out that while some boots add stats, these boots are actually the same as these other boots, but not those boots, and these other boots don't have any stats at all. There are boot secondaries, boot primaries, boot hats and boot miscs, and for a new player it's confusing as hell.
Even without reskins, it's hard enough for someone to learn how several years worth of updates all work. My friend started playing TF2 and he has real trouble understanding how to get unlocks, the point of the game, etc. I can't imagine how confusing it is for him when not all items are better than their stock counterpart, and the only way to get items is to do nothing.
Long story short they add visual noise/clutter that doesn't add anything to the game.

You'd be surprised how much of that was "waiting for a response" time.
Anyone notice now on the Steam store homepage, when it shows you bioshock infinite, they specifically tell you that preordering gets rewards?
Must be struggling to get that last 20 percent or so for promos Valve.
I feel sorry for anyone on this forum or Neogaf who preordered expecting XCom, because i highly doubt thats happening.
Do you reckon if Bioshock doesn't reach the TF2 promo bonuses, they'll remove them from the game?
Or will they just stay ingame and take up valuable space.
Every goddamn time there's a hint of dislike for anything on Facepunch there's always a user like you who sees two negative posts and thinks "what a bandwagon" then posts "Wow, X is popular, guess that means Facepunch hates it now." and it's almost always posted by a butthurt fan who's sad that their waifu-game of the week is being bashed.
"hurr whats a joke"
I'm not even a fan of Angry Birds. I just think it's a decent game and find it silly that some people hate it just because it's popular.

It really didn't sound much like a joke. To be honest, it sounds like you're just covering your own ass by claiming it was.
There's more to it than just being popular. For one thing, it's the biggest sellout since I can't even think of a bigger sell out; you can get Angry Birds themed anythings. The game itself is one of millions of forgettable tower destroying games, yet for whatever reason this one caught on and made millions. It didn't have anything that other tower destroying games didn't have. That very fact gets under a lot of people's skin. Why should generic tower game #3413 take off and be wildly popular?
Not to mention it's a bit sad seeing gaming go from things like Donkey Kong to Sonic the Hedgehog to even Halo and now to a bunch of eyebrowed birds.
It really didn't sound much like a joke. To be honest, it sounds like you're just covering your own ass by claiming it was.
Do you seriously not understand sarcasm? Do you REALLY think "*sips mocha latte, adjusts scarf and starts playing an obscure indie game from the 90's*" is being serious?
For one thing, it's the biggest sellout since I can't even think of a bigger sell out; you can get Angry Birds themed anythings.
So you're not allowed to make money off things? Capitalism might not be the greatest thing but it works. If no-one wanted Angry Birds coffee, it wouldn't sell.
And while it's not the same thing, it's funny that you say that on a subforum about a game that makes millions (?) of dollars per month with virtual keys that are used to unlock virtual boxes for virtual hats and weapons. At least when someone gets an Angry Birds mug, they can keep on drinking their Angry Birds coffee from it forever.
It didn't have anything that other tower destroying games didn't have.

It has cutesy graphics and instantly recognizable characters. It's kinda like the TF2 of tower-destroying games; it looks different enough to attract people but the core gameplay remains similar to other games from the genre.

You should be glad it hasn't started a fad like Sonic did with the WAY-PAST COOL animal mascot thing.

No, it sounded like you were making everyone who disagreed with you was some kind of ultra-hipster.

Way to put words in my mouth. There's a difference between making money and licensing your product to have every kind of possible merchandise ever thought possible.

Except TF2's core gameplay is incredibly different from pretty much every FPS on the market. Name another FPS that has such a heavy focus on specialized class roles on teams where classes are different in ways besides just having different weapons. Angry Birds is literally the same damn thing as every other tower-slingshotting game.

K.
There's a difference between making money and licensing your product to have every kind of possible merchandise ever thought possible.
But there's really not a problem in that, is there? Mario had and still has all kinds of licensed crap but SMG2 wasn't any less enjoyable.
Angry Birds is literally the same damn thing as every other tower-slingshotting game.
The game that started this whole thing, Angry Birds Space, is completely different.
Well, as different as it can while still being a tower-destruction game.
