Actually, I did. The mesh the error is talking about, is basically the complete model: polygons, vertexes, etc. all combined. The SMD format saves the material as part of the mesh, so if you try and save it without, or with a 'wrong' material, it won't recognize it, and is like 'WTF are you doing dude, there's nothing here'. What you must do, is open up the Material Editor (QuickKey: M) and then click on that part that says "Arch and Design", then make it into Standard. If yo scroll down in the options Standard gives you, you'll see BumpMaps. Click the square next to it, press Bitmap, and assign your bumpmap. It can be anything you want, if you're just going to test it, but if you're making a quality model, follow a Bumpmap tutorial. There is one on FPSBanana. After you did this, press the icon (still in Material Editor) that looks like a green square with a pointer towards a checkered orb. This will assign the material to any objects you have selected (so just select about everything you have there). If you did all that, you should now be able to save as a SMD with no errors. Now I'm struggling with getting my testmodel compiled for the Football-helmet. My real hat is going to be for the Pyro, but I figured it'd be funny to see Heavy's running around with a metal bar sticking trough their forehead.
Hahaha, alright, thanks a lot!
3ds max, VERY FUCKING expensive, but it has a 30 day trial version too. And I linked to tutorials in the OP
Blender would work fine too, correct?
Qua modelling, any program that can save as SMD will work, but 3DS Max is just the most powerful, and it has the most tutorials regarding Source Models, hence, more information, hence easier to get help once you're stuck.
Oh hey I was looking for this thread before, thanks shameless bumper
Blender would work fine too, correct?
They say it ain't that great for Source. =/ Go ask in the modeling section.
3ds max, VERY FUCKING expensive, but it has a 30 day trial version too. And I linked to tutorials in the OP
There are certain places one could obtain this for a reasonable price. [editline]02:31PM[/editline]
Alright, I have never made 3d things and have no experience except for maybe that one hand from the Anim8r tutorial which I soon got ADHD on and stopped doing. Also I sort of know about some things (most of the "slang" you young'ns use today and sort of how models work). ANYWAY, I need to know a good starting program and some nice tutorials if that wouldn't be too much trouble.
Other it's views 3ds max is great, but expensive (*cough*), blender isn't very good for Source, but it's alright to start off with. I may be a benefit to decompile a model and work from that, which is where I learned 90% of how to model. [editline]02:33PM[/editline] I forgot, XSI mod tool is actually made for Source, and it's free. It's a stripped down version of a professional modeling program made by Autodesk or XSI or something like that.

Okay:blush:... What ones would I choose to pick a hat. I have no clue where to start.
Bump for muchos usefulness.
Muchos gracias
The linked site is down, isn't it? At least the first two links give me a "not found"
FPSB is particularly bad today it seems
Yeah, it's even worse than normal. By the way, I've been wanting to ask this for a while. If I were to make a replacement for the KGB, what are the Heavy's 'hands' called, so I can try and wrap my model around them? So far I've only been able to find the KGB themselves. Also, anything I should know about c_models? I heard they're harder to make than v_ and w_models, but not how and/or why.
Heavy hands would be hwg/v_hands I GUESS, or just weapons/v_fists. I dunno about W_fists though. I haven't managed to compile a c_model yet.
Does anybody know a tutorial for/can explain the process of faceposing a model? Google just gives me results for using the face poser in GMod or creating scenes.
I have no idea.
Is it me or is fpsbanana.com/tuts not working at all?
I just found the VDC page for creating a character model but it's talking about keyframes and animation clusters and it's all :psyduck:
Is it me or is fpsbanana.com/tuts not working at all?
Same here.
Try looking at them through their google caches
Try looking at them through their google caches
Ah! Of course!
I added it to the OP like anyone will ever notice that.
Got them here for anyone else that wants them: How to make the pictures that wrap around the model things. Them models in the world things. The model things that you can see and are in front of what you can see.How to make them models that go in front of what you can see move and stuff. Couldn't find the one for the renders.

these have been real useful - cheers for the links
No problem, go thank IceColdFreezie on FPSB as he made the tuts
