• My Speculation on the Golden Wrenches

Yes, this is a shameless copy of my Steam Forum thread, but I want to see what Facepunch thinks on the issue. As silly as it sounds, Facepunch is upper-crust compared to other Team Fortress 2 forums and people here are likely to take things into deeper thought. Thread Title: The Golden Wrench is a Ploy. Do ho ho, Doom14 (454) you silly person, what would make you say such a thing? Think about it. We have an ultra-rare item, more so than any other, that has code about being destroyed. Not only that, but it does nothing special other than a Midas effect and looking cool. What would be the point of such wasted effort? Why should Valve bother going through such extensive work just for a distraction. It's not wasted effort. The statue effect is something Valve already knew how to do. All they had to do was set up a weapon with it and give it a new texture. From there out is simple item-drop work. Well, then, Mr.SmartyPants, why would Valve want to distract their community? It's Valve we're talking about. It could be something huge, it could be nothing at all. Remember, when it comes to Team Fortress 2, Valve pretty much treats us like guinea pigs. For all we know, it's just to see how crazy we'll go over a pretty item. Alright, what proof do you have, solid or speculative? Solid is that there's coding for it being destroyed. Maybe it happens from use, over time, on a set date, or even just when crafted with something. Who knows? What this means is that these wrenches probably aren't indefinite. They'll be gone. Speculative is all over the blog post, I can't believe how blind some people have been do it. Let me just pull out some quotes for you: "IT'LL NEVER WORK" "Australia to Rest of World: 'FALSE ALARM, MATE!' " "No Gold After All, Australia's Scientists Nervously Assure Earth" There's also Australium itself. Now, I might have counted wrong, but there were 79 electrons in the element. Au is 79. Au is Gold. There's no such thing as Australium, it's just gold. What makes this special? Gold is not a durable element. They don't have gold-plated weapons and swords for a reason. It's very malleable and ductile (bendable and the sort) and in fact is one of the best metals for such bending (and conducting electricity, if you want to get out some tinfoil hats). Even gold plating doesn't work very well, whether it be gun, knife or blunt object. It wears down, flakes, bends; all such things. tl;dr: Gold wears down in a battle environment, much over on weapon. You only really see it on decorations, jewelery and wires for a reason. It's a soft metal. Alright, sum this all up for me. I can't read a wall of text. The Golden Wrenches are a ploy. They'll break down, most likely. They are a distraction. Valve is testing both coding and community with them; and you, once more, are being the blind lab mice to the experiment. If I were you, I'd be more worrying about what'll be in the update, or what polycount items will be added and if they'll be in the update as well. Also, for all those people like me who needlessly crafted items, we need to worry about getting those back.
You make an excellent point.
That would cause the greatest shitstorm ever to be created and the first Boycott of a game which is actually RELEASED.
they already said they'd keep the wrenches forever
This man speaks wise words, but time itself will reveal the brilliance/insanity behind the wrenches.
Also, at the bottom of the engineer update page, a brown wrench lies on the table. A worn out golden wrench?
STOP POSTING NEW THREADS ABOUT THE GOLDEN WRENCHES your stance DOES NOT MATTER
Your avatar fits. But seriously, the wrenches hardly matter in our case. We care about the update days and our names being written in the history of gaming.
cool except for that sentence on the blog that says they'll keep them forever.
I think we should honor this thread. You deserve an Informative. All you're points make sence, unlike other threads which is just a load of mindless jibble.
Just looks like the gibus effect v2 to me.
Wtf is polycount
cool except for that sentence on the blog that says they'll keep them forever.
Except the blog pays no note to the destroy-coding or the ability to craft/break the wrench. What's the point of it lasting forever if you have to keep it stashed away in your backpack? :v:
Wtf is polycount
Polycount is a site that is holding contest for TF2, where everybody sends their weapon and hat sets in hope of seeing them in-game. The winners will be added on July 12. Look at the blog. Huh. I'm not ninjad...

Besides, the only reason that destroy coding is there is incase someone is stupid enough to discard it.
Those newspaper headlines that you've mentioned are pretty interesting.
Besides, the only reason that destroy coding is there is incase someone is stupid enough to discard it.
I'd do it, if I had one, in a full 32-player server just to hear the b'aww. It's be better if a loud buzzer played and the announcer chimed in for both teams with a "YOU FAILED."

I'll livestream the entire shit If I get one.
That's some deep thinking you went through there.

Real world physics =/= video game physics
I've given up trying to get one, why waste my stuff for a class I rarely play as?
Nice theory. All we can do now is wait for the update and see if it's right or not. :colbert:
I've given up trying to get one, why waste my stuff for a class I rarely play as?
For the fame.
This man has hit the nail right on the head. Sure, I gave crafting a golden wrench a try, but I didn't go batshit over it.
Also, at the bottom of the engineer update page, a brown wrench lies on the table. A worn out golden wrench?
Think you'll find that's just the regular wrench.
I'm definitely not crafting most of my items to try and get a Golden Wrench. Spent too much time trying to earn my weapons :\
I only crafted the junk I never use v:v:v
"IT'LL NEVER WORK"
That applies to the Repair Node as far as I know. As for the "FALSE ALARM MATE" one, I think it's just Australia wanting to keep their gold for themselves. [editline]07:31PM[/editline] Now, those might have a hidden meaning, but I doubt it. There is no "destroy" code for the golden wrench, only a language entry which says that a player destroyed it. If everything in tf_english.txt was relevant, TF2 would be a MMORPG where you have to kill rats, boars and spiders to unlock new quests. [editline]07:32PM[/editline] Plus, they stated several times that the wrenches are permanent. Whoever got them will keep them forever. Valve might be mysterious and shit, but so far, I've never seen them lie. Although I wish you were right. This lottery is a fucking joke. 100 wrenches for god knows how many TF2 owners, I'd have more chanches to get a heart attack than to get one of those.
I convinced some kid on a server I was playing on that I was the guy who distributes wrenches. I told him to trust me and just keep crafting his entire inventory. He ended up with 1 scrap, 1 reclaimed, and 2 refined medals. What he had left in his inventory was a Ghastly Gibus, Engineer Cap, and Mercenary. I'll let some logs explain the rest. [release] mysteryman: when i try to craft refined metal it doesnt work mysteryman: is there anything wrong that i cant craft that GAY_WEED_DAD_69: Perhaps GAY_WEED_DAD_69: I think it's your engineer cap that prevents it from going through. mysteryman: am gonna try everthing GAY_WEED_DAD_69: Certain items have a no-wrench-drop hardcoded into thwem. GAY_WEED_DAD_69: Like the gibus and engineer cap mysteryman: ok GAY_WEED_DAD_69: It goes through the tailgate of the item's code. lolwhat [/release] I then proceed to convince him that a "No-wrench-drop" was hardcoded into his mercenary/gibus/cap. [release]mysteryman: i still cant GAY_WEED_DAD_69: What did you try? mysteryman: to craft refined metal GAY_WEED_DAD_69: 2 refined metal equals golden wrench GAY_WEED_DAD_69: but the engineer cap and gibus will prevent you mysteryman: but i delet the cap and gubus hat[/release] What he ends up with: http://www.tf2items.com/profiles/76561198014142818
