There's a difference between banning people for what they do outside the site and banning people for what they do outside the site [b]in the name of Facepunch[/b]. These people were acting as representatives of this site to that community, and ultimately served to tarnish FP's name.
That should not be tolerated, because if it is then people will keep doing it and FP's name will end up another "bad word" like 4chan. Most of 4chan is just fine; it's just people discussing interests. But their /b/ board got together as some dumb "anonymous legion" and made it their mission to "raid" the fuck out of whatever they felt like. Now all 4chan is known for is raiding and trolling and it's impossible to talk about 4chan-related things with most people because despite never having been to the site they already know that it's full of assholes who DDoS anything they don't like out of existence.

What you say is completely correct. The acts of the few should not be treated as the acts of all. This can be said for both sides in this equation. But truly we do not need to permanently ban people. How can you learn from a mistake if there is no return. The P-ban is like the death sentience, the easiest way out.
