Helen is manipulating the two brothers for her own amusement, since it gives her an endless amount of bloodshed. The "not-dying" machines will not grant immortality, but instead revive the user without any injuries or maladies. The brothers will then use them on their mercenaries, which is why you respawn in-game.
That's my theory anyway.
So Valve is trying to make sense out of respawning, the end result being the game being backed up by completely logical thinking and therefore scientifically plausible.
