Perhaps destroying the wrench has some meaning to it. I mean why would they enable the option to do so? Let alone a cross-server notification?

You can delete anything from your backpack, I guess that includes the wrench.

Obviously he deleted it because he was tired of having 34 friend requests a minute and people spamming his comments page with "OMG DIE" and "LUCKY FUCKER" and just said "Screw it, I'm deleting it."
