Incoming important announcement about Arms Race.
So, the Arms Race results can be released if you guys want, but there is another layer of verification I would like to do in order to ensure the votes are legit. A concern I have is that people may be impersonating many other users by putting in random, but real, user credentials into the form. In order to ensure whether each vote is real or not I would like voters to rate this post so I know their vote was genuine. So...
If you voted for an Arms Race entry, please rate this post "informative."
Since potential impostors cant rate for the user they impersonate, this will give me a verified list of voters that I can the compare to my table.
(I wish I had thought this before I opened up the voting.)
If participants do not think this is necessary and just want to see the results let me know and I will just skip this and and count all the votes as is (except for duplicates and other confirmed fraudulent votes).
Sorry about the delay guys, but I want to make sure I know the legitimacy of the votes as well as possible, especially with some very close results.
Again, rate "informative" if you voted.
there are actually fraudulent votes? i was only kidding...
there are actually fraudulent votes? i was only kidding...
I did have some multiple votes from the same users and some fake votes impersonating me, so those were taken out. (For multiple votes from the same user for a single entry, only one of the votes will count. For multiple votes from the same user for a multiple entries, none of them will count).
I have no idea how rampant impersonations might be (the only ones may have been of me), but what I do know is that it would be easy to do. People can vote as many times as they want and find random Facepunch users to impersonate each time.
If every voter sees this (unlikely, but we'll see), then all the fraudulent votes will stick out.
Could you tell us how many fraudulent vote were made? Would be a shame if my vote wasn't accepted because someone else used my name for another item.
I just realized something: The first two prizes consist of a cash prize and games. But since a lot of entries were a team effort, how could it possibly be split evenly?
Could you tell us how many fraudulent vote were made? Would be a shame if my vote wasn't accepted because someone else used my name for another item.
I'll be releasing the results in full including ones I tagged as bad, once I announce the winners. Currently the total number of bad votes that will not be counted is 20. The only definite impersonations were of me (since its easy for me to know I didn't vote), but some of the duplicates may be impersonations as well (though I think they are just the same person doing it several times).
I don't think there are any impersonations of users that frequent the TF2 section of Facepunch. If that was the case, there would have been more duplicates then their were. I'm concerned though that there could be impersonations of users who do not frequent the TF2 section, which would be harder to spot (since it is less likely those users voted themselves).
This fear may be completely overblown on my part, but I just wanted to be safe.

Oh yes I know, I had in the rules at one point a reminder of this (that each prize cannot not be split or duplicated), but its no longer there. I won't be picking who gets what though. Participants in a team must decide amongst themselves how to share their prizes. All the Members of a team will verify with me who they want the prizes to go to, before they will be given out.
Fortunately with the generous amount of game donations, it makes splitting up the prize pool easier for the participants.
One way the steam code can be split up is that one of partners could take it and buy a gift for another partner with it. Or one partner can takes the code while the other takes the games. Its up to the teams how they want to do the sharing.
I vote for EVERYTHING [sp]which won't do anything because all the votes are equal[/sp] :v:
Just updated the OP with the new prize list!
Once everything is settled with the votes, the winners will be revealed on the OP.
Don't forget to verify if you voted.

Game Zombie just donated 11 Steam Games, the most games donated so far! Thanks (living dead) man!

So, I don't know how this fraudulent will turn out, but just for the sake of information, I voted for the Gamma Gazer, IIRC.
Great, now I can't really remember what I voted for, but I'm pretty sure it was for this pistol.

Don't worry, you're not one of the duplicates.
Actually to make things easy, here's a list of the people with unresolved duplicate issues:
Goldgalaxy
Punchy
Smittster
Resolving all the duplicates won't guarantee no more fraudulent votes though. What I'm more concerned about is users that haven't actually voted, being impersonated (so in this case their would be no duplicate popping up, but the vote would still be fraudulent). It's impossible to fully know whether each vote really came from the user listed, but the rating verification helps.
It would have been much easier had I thought of this before starting the voting, then all the real votes would already be verified by the time the voting end.
I cannot decide. The weapons are all well done and somewhat polished, but only a few gets the best and shares who ever helped them (if they felt like doing it). Mind boggling...
I hate to sound impatient, but the wait is making me restless. How are the votes looking, Verno?
I hate to sound impatient, but the wait is making me restless. How are the votes looking, Verno?
So here's the situation...
Currently a little over 30% of the votes have been verified. If verified votes were to be the only votes that counted, 2 of the top 6 entries would be different and two of the top entries would switch places (compared to the full list of votes).
So why only uses verified votes?
verified votes are votes that are definitely not fraudulent.
All the other non-verified votes may not be fraudulent, but there is still a risk some are.
This is because it is very easy to fake a vote by inputting random, but real, user credentials (username & profile url) when you vote (thus impersonating a user). People can also vote multiple times, increasing the risk of bad votes.
Only going with verified votes means that this is not an issue, because the user confirmed their vote by rating this post.
There are three options at this point:
Informative - Only count the current verified votes (and reveal the winners tomorrow).
Zing - Count all the votes that weren't confirmed fraudulent, but could be (and reveal the winners tomorrow).
Late - Keep on accepting vote verifications for X number of days to try to reach a larger percentage of verified votes (holding off the reveal).
If you choose Late, let me know how long you want to wait.
I'll post a notification for when I stop taking verifications.
i chose late, but realistically, that announcment post is already buried so i don't foresee many more confirmations coming in. i'm just the kinda guy to give benefit of the doubt so i want the votes to be more inclusive. every fewer legit vote getting ignored is a good thing.
as for as actually waiting, i think any time from wednesday to next weekend would be fair, whenever you have the free time.
of course, if you foresee mechtroid getting hacked again then by all means announce the winners and give out the prizes asap :p

I would be thrilled to see who wins tomorrow, but the right thing to do would be to wait. 30% verified votes is too low to call a winner in good conscience

I definitely prefer waiting, but I know you guys have had to wait quite a while for the results.
I would post a link to this in the Emporium thread, it has many more viewers that this thread, so people who only followed this competition due to the cross posts can then verify their votes.
I definitely prefer waiting, but I know you guys have had to wait quite a while for the results.
i'm not anxious about it. i gave the time frame as a guess to what length of time would be worthwhile to wait. personally i don't mind waiting a lot longer.
Wait some more days but honestly I think you should count the votes that weren't confirmed fraudulent as legit by the end
It's easier to fraudulently vote for president based on your current system

Thanks guys for picking late, I appreciate the patience.
Next time I'll ask for a rating verification during the voting, so their won't be a delay like this again.
Don't forget to verify if you voted.
How many private messages can you store through facepunch? That might be a way to go about it. Have them verify through a pm as a final step next time.
How many private messages can you store through facepunch? That might be a way to go about it. Have them verify through a pm as a final step next time.
The original plan was to, at the end of voting, send out PMs to a random sample of voters to snuff out fraudulent votes, but then I realized that it would be quicker and easier to do it with ratings. Also, not every user has PMs enabled. Ratings accomplish the same things as private messages would. On the other hand, PMs do have the benefit of the user being directly informed of their need to verify.
I might send out some PMs, if I don't get enough ratings.
The only problem with rating verifications is that I didn't think of it sooner. If I asked people to verify their vote by rating the op right after they voted, there wouldn't be this delay. But I didn't think of this until after voting ended. Duplicates can still only be resolved with PMs though (unless the duplicates vote for the same thing).
Don't forget to verify if you voted.
So here's the situation, again:
Currently, nearly 50% of the votes have been verified. If verified votes were the only votes that counted, 2 of the top 6 entries would be different, two entries would switch places, and their would be a new three way tie (that I'll break myself).
I gave my spiel on verified vs non-verified votes before, but basically verified votes are votes that are definitely not fraudulent. Not all non-verified votes are fraudulent, but there is still a risk some are.
Also, the amount of new verified votes per day has dwindled quiet a bit.
There are three options at this point:
Informative - Only count the verified votes (and reveal the winners tomorrow).
Zing - Count all the okay votes, including votes that weren't confirmed fraudulent, but could be (and reveal the winners tomorrow).
Late - Keep on accepting vote verifications for a little bit longer to try to reach a larger percentage of verified votes (holding off the reveal).
Man that's rough. Only 20% more verified votes after a week? I'm voting "Zing" just so you can stop working your ass off already.
Why not just make a new voting system(not google doc). Seems like this was full of holes since day one
Why not just make a new voting system(not google doc). Seems like this was full of holes since day one
Verified votes act as the new voting system. It would be pointless to release a new form as I would still need rating verifications if I used other forms such as Survey Monkey. Next time I'll ask for rating verifications right from the start of voting, so this will not be an issue in the future.
Besides, it seems people prefer that I reveal the results tomorrow (using all the non-bad votes), so that's what I'll do.
i voted informative. if you go zing now, you'd just wasted a week's worth of verification work on vernoguy's effort.
also, 3 way tie! that's way more dramatic to see. i want it to happen.
but oh well, people have spoken.
Seeing as it looks like I'm going to be releasing the results tomorrow, here's a little teaser:

This shows 1st-6th place and the 38% is the rest of the votes.

Wow, votes are a lot more spread out than I anticipated.
