Thanks for the positive feedback guys. When I started making my poster I realized I can not draw to save my life, but I still wanted the cartoony look. To achieve this I started by exporting the shovel model to 3ds max and setup ground to cast shadows on:

I then edited the shovel texture in GIMP to reduce it to mostly solid colors:

I used Ink and Paint materials to make any shading caused by lighting to be very simplistic.

Then some editing in GIMP to get the result. It seems like plenty of people don't believe they are capable of creating posters because they believe they don't have a talent for drawing. I wanted to explain my process to show that there are ways to get around your limitations, you just have to attempt new methods to see what works.

edit: I just realized that the point that you chose to cast light on fucked up the shadows of all the shadows in the back/left.. :C
