I still think that is a silly idea. As on killing floor there description is like it is supposed to still be muffled but the game couldn't be arsed to put his mumbles in so they left it as the 2 male voice actors.

the old design is honestly fine, all you need to do is make the wires look more natural and the hat itself more like the default hard hat.

Hey guys, I just had an idea for an Engy hat:

My somewhat poor drawing skills aside; I was looking at the Tesla Hat concepts, and this popped into my mind, I though "If Engineer's okay with sawing off his arm, why not the top of his head? v:v:v"
I know it's similar to that one brain jar made for the Medic, but since the Engineer doesn't have hair, I think it would work better.
The top hat I just threw in for fun.

Old is great, 5 is rad, 8 is cool too.
I like 4 but it looks hardest
5 makes him look like a super-hero, and it's the one I like the most.
3, I like the idea of a single detailed one, it'll be nice and neat and not disleveled
