MAJOR TF2 update for 10/29/13 (Fifth Annual Scream Fortress)

So I either get
Connecting to Server
Failed after 4 retries
Or I join with the laggiest connection on Earth despite what my ping actually is
Is this my network or is tf2 dying?
I honestly thought my computer finally gave up and couldn't run TF2 anymore, kinda glad I'm not the only one crashing.
Seriously, am I the only one who hasn't crashed at all?
Never crashed here either after hours of play.
I didn't do anything to TF2 prior to this update either. Mods are probably crashing the hell out of it.
I wonder if HUD mods are just randomly causing crashes again.
What's up with this whole skeleton king business? redmond/blutarch says he's coming all the time, but i have yet to see him. Is he in some hidden place or what?

As far as I can tell, he's broken and only spawns if you're on a local server.
He's just like the team-colored skeletons you can spawn yourself, only he's twice as tall, green, has a ton of health, and attacks both teams. His attacks do like a hundred damage and send you flying, and if you kill him, he drops a purple spellbook.
Also he spawns with a bunch of normal-sized green skeletons, and they never show up either.

I'm not using any mods, I made sure to remove every single custom file from the game and verified the files.
It still crashes at random times.
I am going to go buy that unicorn hat and wear it with pride. It fits halloween and the voice lines are funny and great.
Okay I won't bitch at you for liking the hat but this is bullshit. That's like if I said tacos are related to Christmas.

ah, that explains why I don't remember seeing him
Drown me in cardboard if you wish, but I think this batch of halloween items was pretty much perfectly implemented.
They made it perfectly clear beforehand that all items with the tag would be restricted, which meant that
a) The restrictions didn't come as a disappointment to the item makers once the update went live.
b) Even the item makers that still care about the TF2 esthetic could let their imaginations run wild.
c) By associating the restriction with the tag rather than making case-by-case judgements, they avoided the whole 'why is that guys unfitting item not restricted while my totally fitting one is' mess.
They then used the creative freedom allowed by the holiday restriction to implement a ridiculous amount of new items with a ridiculous breadth of imagination, giving players a whole lot of variety and item makers a whole lot of selfmades.
I agree that there are a bunch of unrestricted existing items that are more unfitting than some of the items added now, but I'd say that's a problem with the updates that added those, not with this one.
Of course, I'm biased on account of being really relieved I won't have to find 100+ new reskin mods.

Halloween is for wearing silly costumes so... yeah.

When I tried this new map in singleplayer and Skeleton King spawned, I hopped on the cart and what happened?
It attacked and blew up into pieces.
And I didn't even do anything.
Then, I tried in multiplayer.
It was actually very fun. No crashes, fps was pretty good, and ping was only high when quickplay threw me into one server in Texas.
I were in one server for quite some time and only got three randomly appearing gifts.
Too bad no neutral skeletons appeared :/

But tacos are always a relevant thing.
Man, I was really looking forward to this update, and now after being able to play about 3 hours I only have one thing to say.
Hightower sucks major hard.
Everything else about this update, to me, was completely fine, I didn't mind the restrictions because I didn't really like the items that got in. [sp]except that pyrosaur tail, I really want that.[/sp] and the spells are a huge amount of fun to use, they're practically new weapons
It's just that every server I've attempted to join and have decent ping had sentries spammed all over the map and pretty much everyone was either scout, engi or soldier.
Why this map out of every other PLR map that TF2 has? Heck, I'd have taken pipeline over this. [sp]tbh pipeline is better imo, except that 2nd area.[/sp]

You got to give Valve credit though.
They made people actually play the objective for once.

My problem is Valve selecting items that could fit all year just because they were popular and had the tag. Yes, the contributor knew what they were doing, but many of the items accepted could have just as easily been added any other time. And there were some items that couldn't be added any other time that were not added.
They needed to be better about picking the items to add as restricted. Just because the contributor listed it as a Halloween item doesn't mean it needed to be added, nor did it mean they needed to add it restricted.
Another issue is a few of these were old items that had the tag added. So basically people voted for these items wanting to use them and then the contributor added the tag and now it's restricted, even if a few months ago the item was submitted to be used whenever.
Really disappointed in Helltower, it's really boring. Lack of boss really kills the atmosphere, No wheel of fate bores things down. I had a really open mind about this update which was the sad part. Ghost Fort was way more fun on so many levels.

Seems the same old, sticky rocket mini-sentry spammed map to me, I couldn't even go near the cart and the other team were to focused on spawn camping.

i think the eventual stalemate that drags on at the final push is what makes it boring. they've already alleviated some of the impasse by getting rid of the backwards rolling on the hill. perhaps they could have made the elevators into pits instead like nightfall, it's hell after all.
This year's Halloween event: B-
+ New lines
+ Fun, new mechanics that make it unique
+ New items that don't suck
- The map is Hightower
- Valve's priorities are out of order (getting new lines for all the classes, but only for something we will barely ever see, etc.)
- After an hour, I already heard all of Blutarch and Redmond's lines
- The map is Hightower
- The event is buggy and a part of it doesn't even work
- The map is Hightower

Well yeah I can´t deny that.
I get the feeling this years Halloween event would have been better if Valve would, I don´t know, make/buy an actual new map instead of reskining already existing ones, like they do every year.
I assumed you would apply eternaween to an item and then when you equip that item you see halloween items

He's been spawning in some of the servers I've been. Not all of them but some of them.

The spells are actually pretty fun to use. Though they are a clear example of why Valve removed grenades from the game before release.
I find the spells really fun to use, and im enjoying this event more than last years one
the jump spell is my favourite one.
I'm sad because, with a few exceptions, in two weeks this update won't have mattered. At all. 15+ minutes of voicelines from the mercs and none of them are applicable to anything but a Hightower skin/certain items on certain days.
I hope more servers allow Halloween mode all the time.
