Gameplay-wise I always used Blastoise. Mega Punch usually floored the shit out of everything in 1 hit, so on top of having really OP attacks, he eventually just got to some obscenely high level and towered over all the other Pokemon.

i remember having a level 87 squirtle, level 74 geodude, and level 58 weedle that i never evolved. i pretty much just did that for the novelty, having a strong high level pokemon that looks all harmless and innocent is pretty awesome.
