The Scottish Resistance is great, it's the kritzkrieg to the medigun. Left click does the same thing but right click has a twist.
I haven't even unlocked the Eyelander due to the milestone bugs. But I can already tell that it's being used by people who just want to use it for the sake of it. They'll run across an entire battlefield thinking they're invincible and just start swinging away. I've only been killed by one once because I'm not dumb enough to let a Demoman successfully charge into me sfter avoiding several chargers in L4D2 in my time.
So yeah, the sword and shield were dumb ideas and I always expected them to be from the first day they were announced.
I thought that the targe still gives you crits after a charge even if you're using a bottle. So you can mix and match.
Oh, and the demoman looks like a moron when he's swinging the eyelander (unless you're doing the taunt kill). I've never seen someone use a sword like that before.
I agree entirely, the dynamite would have very much been a preferred unlock for me.
Yah there was a really well thought out unlock called the T.A.R.T.A.N which was one dynamite pack, and you could only have one at a time, but it had a greatly increased blast radius and damage of 6 stickies (8 stickies in one place are stronger bu have lower blast radius) and it had more health, would take 3 wrench hits, and maybe would be sapable. that would have been much better than the ScoRes, it's just so annoying, sure you can lay more bombs but chances are you're gonna be dead by the time someone comes out the door because you have to stand in a line of sight with the door if you want to deal any damage.
Lots of stuff.
Okay, so, while a demoman using the targe and bottle is slightly less effective, he does in fact get the crits from a long distance charge...
I have gotten a stupid amount of kills using this method, and killing people with the grenade launcher at long range.
My aim with that thing has improved since this update came out. :v:
And sentries still reveal their secrets to me if I can aim over and around something...
I can't see the targe and sword being used in comp play, though.
I agree with OP, Demo has the worst unlocks so far. Soldier's are meh.

He may not have the bottle, but he's still drunk.

Yeah, anyone competent who has played l4d2 knows exactly how to avoid a charge, especially since it looks like Valve copy-pasted the same code (you can't change angles while charging, etc).
while it is satisfying to chop off heads, it's just not practical.
i also dislike the sword and shield because it leads to more awkward melee fights where 2 players bumble around swinging wildly at eachother instead of just shooting eachother to death like they would have before this update.
[editline]04:54PM[/editline]
Also, someone pointed out that with each update, the pyro class becomes more and more useless. I'd say that this update is just another nail in his coffin. Seriously, if any class should have been given a melee weapon with longer reach, it should have been the Pyro who is DESIGNED for close quarters combat. Now because of this update we have the Pyro: Lite.
The charge for the shield should have had a custom animation at least. The Demoman leaning forward with his shield in front of him.
come to think of it, the demoman is technically more useful in close quarters because of his explosion/fire resistance.
I like how everyone went from "FUCK YEAH A DECAPITATING SWORD" to "wurst unlck evur".
My overall impression is that the SR is useless. I guess the explosion system should have been easier. Instead of pointing EXACTLY at the pair of stickies you want to set off, perhaps it should trigger all bombs visible on the entire screen. That's just my idea.
It may be of use in highly skilled hands, but the original launcher still beats it by being easier to use.
And the sword/shield thing might be an answer to the melee class idea. Also, if you think about it, they've created a direct combat sub-class from a highly indirect combat class.
I love the new sword and shield. I didn't like demoman before but now it might be one of my favorite classes to play.
Additionally, you can do fine with the bottle instead of the sword.
I'm more disappointed with the soldier's update than the demoman.
I think there's a bigger problem with the soldier weapons. The pick axe does 200 points of damage when they are slightly injured, making it an instakill weapon.
I think valve did a good job. I dont want them to change it and they wont.
Not to mention the only demoman-like unlock he gets is crap.
I beg to differ. I got the Scottish Resistance from random drop, and ever since then I've been using it all day and...Holy shit.
The detonation system just opens a whole load of tactical possibilities. When defending, you can cover mutliple routes, and even leave your stickies alone, as they will still be there, regardless of what bombings you did elsewhere with it. In offense, you can greatly bomb behind enemies from a safe spot, and blow them up when they are fleeing, and... What do you lose in exchange? Oh my, you can't spray and pray all over the battlefiled, clicking the right and left buttons like an idiot and blow everyone up? Boo fucking hoo, I hated it even when I was the one doing it. The Demoman is supposedly a defense class, and the SR fulfills the sticky launcher's original purpose (setting up tactical traps and covering routes) greatly.
Why is there no replacement for the Grenade Launcher, Valve? Why couldn't you do something like magnetic grenades or a new grenade launcher that crits when it hits buildings? Why are we stuck with an uninteresting unalternative to the bottle and a shield that offers some, but not much, protection and ANOTHER sticky launcher? Why not cluster bombs or something?
Grenades. Learn to use them. They are much more efficient for taking sentries out than you think.
It's exactly like the Direct Hit, if you're good enough with the grenade launcher so you don't rely on your precious sticky bombs, it will make you much more efficient.
The sticky launcher carries 8 shots per clip, while the grenade launcher only has 4. The grenade launcher also has about 16 extra grenades while the sticky launcher has 36. That's a total of 44 greandes for the sticky launcher versus 20 for the grenade launcher. I think you can use a few stickies more and end up just as efficient.
itt: people underestimate the stickybomb launcher / scottish resistance combined with the eyelander
hit them with a couple of stickies and lob their head off to become the prince of the universe! :madmax:
The SR is the best unlock for the demoman. The Targe and the Eyelander should have been scrapped when first conceived. It's good to have a new defensive unlock but the Eyelander offers nothing towards offense. Healing yourself when you're in combat is fun, but it's a stupid weapon otherwise because it reduces your health and takes away your wonderful bottle. The Targe has some purpose as it allows you to reach far away enemies quickly and make effective escapes, and perhaps it works as an unlock, but to use its full potential you need the Eyelander, which Rambo summed up well.

Of course, if you're at the range you need to be to reach a guy with the eyelander and are using sticky bombs, you're acting suicidal already.
also the demoman is still technically demolition with his new unlocks
just think of it as a battering ram as opposed to explosives
I think the Sco Res needs some kind of see-through system. I suck at explaining so here's a screenshot.

(Ignore the fact that it's a scout, I took a dustbowl picture from TF2wiki.)
Some kind of glow you can see through walls that circles every trap needs to be done. To blow a trap just right-click while aiming anywhere in that area. Simple, not overpowered as it just helps defensively and if you're really far away from your stickies it's gonna be harder to aim directly at the stickies. The glow wouldn't appear if the stickies are directly in your line of sight though.
Basically how you get that red glow on hunters in L4D even if you're on the other side.
I see nothing wrong with any of the unlocks. But thats just my opinion.
I agree with Batmoutarde, they could use some indicator through walls. It'd be even more useful.
The demoman is the new tenth warrior class
targe and sword is badass
i get in the top 3 every round with it
Oh boy, can't connect to Steam.
I love the ScoRes but yes I agree with Batmoutarde
Here is an example of how awesome it is
There are 14 stickies in this room, each spot has 2-3 stickies on it.

Do I win? :v:
I think I'm missing 1...
Nope that's them all, Seems like a really good thread if you ask me.
(find the stickies)
As someone who didn't like the Sword and the Targe when I first tried them out, but grew to love them once I realised just how versatile they both are, I disagree entirely.
Assuming you actually know how to play Demoman correctly, that is you know how to use the Grenade Launcher properly and don't use the Sticky Launcher for every little thing, then losing your Scrumpy Bottle and your Sticky Launcher should not at all feel like a hit.
The targe's most useful ability is it's explosive defense ability, you can take multiple rockets/grenades with the targe equipped, this paired with the grenade launcher alone is quite overpowered in my opinion, soldiers and demomen who don't have the targe equipped are at a major disadvantage. But not only does the targe protect you from explosive damage, it also allows you to have a quick boost of speed which can save you from rather sticky situations where you would, without the targe charge, die.
The Eyelander, it's not really all that strong at first, it doesn't crit unless you use the targe and it removes 25 HP from you from the get go, useless right? Wrong. Bag two melee kills without dying and you're back to normal HP, plus you're now much faster than you would normally be, bag another 2 kills and you're at 210 HP, more than what you would normally be at, plus you're now super fast and you do a ton more damage in the melee department, even if you only use the eyelander to land 4 heads for yourself and then never use it again until you die, it's really an improvement over the bottle of scrumpy by far, the buffs are really overpowered once you acquire them.
Now combine the targe with the eyelander, and what you get it a 210 HP monster that can catch up to any class, can take about 6 or 7 rockets and possesses the ability to instantly kill anyone with a well timed charge. Learn how to use the targe and the eyelander, and they'll be good to you.

anyone I've seen complaining about the SR hasn't used it enough to figure out to detonation range is some sort of cone, moving further away increases the detonation radius, this also works as a sort of balance because you can't stick a bunch of stickies on every exit from a spawn, move to the other side of the map then detonate them separately
it's one of those situational unlocks, it's most effective in something like defending in Tubine where it has the advantage of people able to cover more entrances and doesn't leave other entrances wide open after detonating once
it's more suited to defence than offence, congratulations to everyone who cries that it's crap for pushing carts
