Lets just hope these are easy to obtain, and drop frequently. Or are craftable in some way. If they make them have to be purchased, or make them drop rarely, it'll be bad.

It'd only give a really big advantage to the ones that bought them or found them if they were to be hard to obtain. [editline]24th December 2010[/editline] Personally, I'd really like this. It'd give people their own oppertunities to design their own playstyle.
Trainer Medic uses firstaidium on heavy! But it failed! Heavy has fainted.
I'm now having nightmares about self-healing dead ringer spies
I think they tried something like this before but it didn't work. The addition to the game files is ominous though... I also suspect we'll be say, starting out with say vanilla fists and then adding stuff onto them. If it actually happens. Which I hope it doesn't. :(
Powerups! brb, boycotting.
So how would you distinguish between normal and modified weapons? More particle effects? Not at all? Uh... Maybe they'll link it to weapon coloring, at least a red Shotgun will be a strong signal that it has +20% damage +50% reload time on it. That would probably fuck up the art direction again, but I don't think such things stand in Valve's way anymore. I still hope it'll be a little extra for a fun-gamemode such as Medieval where Engie can be a smith and upgrade weapons. As Medieval restricts the loadout, you have a smaller amount of weapons you have to actually recognize before it's too late.
this will suck. There is too much variety then.
PLEASE VALVE DON'T. Just add really really rare gold weapons or something in crates if you're that desperate for money.
These strings have been in since the Australian Christmas update.
how I mine for sandvich
PLEASE VALVE DON'T. Just add really really rare gold weapons or something in crates if you're that desperate for money.
After one or two years or so they'll be fairly common tho I believe, no matter how low the drop rate.
The whole point of weapons is that you could see what the opponent was using and know what you were up against, and plan accordingly. This will ruin that. Oh boy a Chargin' Targe Demo! Looks like instead of using my flamethrower, I'll have to use my shotgun due to the -50% fire damage! Oh no, he added bullet resistance, I died.
I'm sure Valve is just kidding. Like these npc_spiders and other things in the tf_english. Right? :ohdear:
Y'know, to preserve balance, I think that weapon customisation should follow this kinda format if ever implemented. Rule #1: The Elementiums can only be used with Stock weapons (Pistol, Shotgun, SMG, Rifle, etc) or certain unlocks that act in a unique fashion (Sandvich, Targe, Jarate, Razorback, Gunboats, Buff Banner, etc). Rule #2: Certain Elementiums can only be used with certain weapon types, as well as certain classes. For example, Kaboomium (not a real Elementium) can only be used on weapons for Soldier and Demoman (with a few expections, as seen below), whilst Leakium can only be used with (certain) melee weapons. Rule #3: Custom Weapons are made via this method: first you have the Elementium, then you craft it with a Gadget Token and/or a Metal (of which type I don't know). This yields a -insert prefix here- Customiser, the prefix of which depends on the Elementium used. For example, Leakium yields a Bloody/Bleeding Customiser, whilst Kaboomium yields an Explosive/Exploding Customiser. Rule #4: A Customiser is used similar to a Name/Description Tag, in the way that you create the Custom Weapon by selecting the Customiser and "Use With" it on the applicable weapon, thus creating the new weapon, which gains the attributes imparted by the Customiser, including a prefix formed of specialised text that mirrors the attributes granted. For example, Critproof Customiser + Sandvich = Critproof Sandvich, with the "Critproof" being surrounded by an electrical aura. Alternatively, instead of new text type, the text colour could be different. Rule #5: When using a Customiser on a weapon, the Are You Sure? box (similar to the one that pops up when you're about to colour a hat) will display the attributes conferred, both the positives and the negatives, as well as what the weapon will look like after modification (it has either a fancy attachment, has a new skin, or is an entirely new model, depending on the weapon, but either way is still made by a dashingly handsome community modeller/skinner). Being able to see what weapon your opponent has is crucial. For example, if you're using an Explosive Customiser on a Flaregun (it might work), the box will display what it looks like and the attributes it has, such as igniting everyone in the blast radius, whilst having no initial contact damage nor official explosive damage. Balancing will need to be done within the Beta testing zone, though. Another example would be using bullet resistance on the Targe, which would give bullet resistance, but lower or out-right remove the fire resistance. (This addresses GasticTank's concerns) Rule #6: Elementiums can be extracted by crafting together 3 items that share similar attributes. For example, Tribalman's Shiv + Southern Hospitality + Boston Basher = Leakium, though you can craft together several of the same weapon, too, such as Black Box + Black Box + Blutsauger = Jugulum (the Elementium of stealing health, as well as an obscure pun on vampires). To sum up: Rule #1: Can only customise Stock weapons or certain Unique weapons. Rule #2: Can only use certain Elementiums with certain weapons or classes. Rule #3: Elementium + Token/Metal = Customiser. Rule #4: Customiser + Weapon = Custom Weapon. Rule #5: Customisation gives both positive and negative attributes, replacing some attributes where necessary. Rule #6: Crafting together 3 items with similar attributes yields an Elementium of that type. I hope this seems balanced enough. C&C is requested, but keep it constructive as usual.
-rules about buildable weapons- I hope this seems balanced enough. C&C is requested, but keep it constructive as usual.
Pretty sure that even if valve used that system, they would screw it up in no time. "How?" Because Valve.
Wow, 3 minutes. Was it really that quick to read the shorthand? Just curious, that's all. Also, that would only happen if they don't test it in the Beta, which is what the Beta is technically for anyways.
Oh my god if they are making perks I'm qutting TF2. I play TF2 because it's different than most games out there. I don't want to play Team of Duty: Fortress Ops.
I'm suprised that they seem to be doing this via tokens from what I've read rather then actual visual additions, such as a battery or a huge exhaust pipe. Something instantly recognisable so you'd be able to know what exactly the weapon does. Though they could be doing it via tokens in a closed beta of the idea.
I'm hoping that if they do go through with customizable stats, they go with something like that; the customization adds a giant battery, or changes the skin and gives it serrated edges, or something like that. Something to make it more obvious what weapon does what based on a quick glance. For ranged weapons, the firing sound should also be different to distinguish it from everything else.

Now all it needs is a Red Dot Sight
i hope it will only apply to stock weapons and will come with downsides.
i hope it will only apply to stock weapons and will come with downsides.
I think stock weapons and weapons that change play style, like Huntsman and Crossbow.
So what kill streak setup are you guys using? My personal setup favorite is: SPY plane Attack DOGS Nuke [editline]24th December 2010[/editline] You can get easy nukes by camping with the C&D
I think the only way I'd want this in-game is if it's exclusive to a co-op or singleplayer mode. This is basically the same thing as custom classes and perks, and the addition of those would completely ruin the game.

I would like me some bulletproofium And i guess leakium increases the jarate/mad milk regeneration.
PLEASE VALVE DON'T. Just add really really rare gold weapons or something in crates if you're that desperate for money.
Whoever said anything about money? I'm pretty sure if the store wasn't there we'd still be getting these tokens the same way as if it was there.
I think stock weapons and weapons that change play style, like Huntsman and Crossbow.
yeah. probably there would be "upgradable" tag for items, and i hope it would be like paint, i mean you can't make item giving you fire resistance AND boolet resistance, only one. if you don't want that perk - wait for "clean" weapon to drop and forge it, or re-forge with other perk. Also i hope it would "paint" weapons, like bleeding perk will apply "spiky" texture to weapon, health regen perk will make you (not weapon) sightly glow, booletpruf would make weapon darker.
I would like me some bulletproofium And i guess leakium increases the jarate/mad milk regeneration.
more like Secretionium/Excrementium
