A non-vintage Hatless scout got me one refined and one reclaimed metal.
So Darwin's Shield = One refined one reclaimed. Not the deal of the century, but I wasn't going to get much more for a hatless scout, and a non-vintage one to boot.

Look for offers and bargain. If you're not doing it on TF2TP but on a board like FP or SPUF, keep telling people you got a slightly better offer from someone else, but you like their offer for a different reason, so not all is lost and you can mostly get a little extra.
Of course those "slightly better offers" are made-up.
In general I'd say a hat of the same "hat tier" (Google it if you're not sure) or a few Reclaimed Metals. For some reason most kinds of hats are only worth 1 or 2 Refined since Halloween, but I'd always demand my 3 metal I'll need for an extra hat unless the hat is "shit tier".
It's a bit weird to go by values to market makes up and think in hat tiers, but it's the easiest way to judge a big part of the part of the market that participates in trading threads/sites/servers.
