The only difference is the animation when switching to them. Other than that I believe that they're the same.
Guess you're right, they could give him a 2 handed holding animation. So it is 8.

Reduce there size a little and make them lay flat and place them on the side like the air bottle.
Make them hang off the bottom instead of protruding from the top? Put something else on the top.
Make them smaller in length but and put them on the side, or on the bottom.
