Batteries, lightbulbs, wires, raygun rings and such. Why don't you look up some 50's/60's space comics and look for inspiration for that?

Ok, I'll do this calmly. First, how long did you spend on this? Two, it's going to need a bit more detail then a flat shape with a second polygon to simulate it being round. Also, tricannon? (the filename.) It looks like the unholy spawn of the loch-and-load and a force of nature turned on it's side.
To sum it up, come back later when you've done a fair bit of work on it, since I can't really give a critique of it now. I just don't have enough information on it.

put a battery where the cylinder should go, have small bulbs go down the barrel, and have a laser lens at the end of the barrel.

Are you using Blender, if so fix the area that looks inside out by flipping the normals on the effected areas.
Also, read tutorials before you post here, I know more often then not you would rather want critique on your first model then your 5th after listening to a tutorial, but trust me a crappy 1st model is much outweighed by an awesome 5th model. Not that the number matters or anything.

The battery thing I was going to do :)
as a game-play function lasers are already in, so it could replace the pistol as a charged up weapon, or something along those lines.

I've only spend a few hours on this so far and I know it's nowhere near done. I'm not sure what you mean when you say it's a flat shape, because it is fully 3D It may look 2D because of the angle. Or are you saying talking about the flatness of the side of the stock? Because that's just me experimenting with the smoothing groups. As to the file name, I used the name tricannon because it has three barrels ,you can't see that in the picture because of the poor angle I chose. I also plan for the barrels to look like small cannons.

wrangled sentrys have a laser effect, which in source is just a small sprite tiled indefinitely, which can be done with almost all hit scan weapons. see: tau cannon from HL1, combine snipers from HL2 and so on.
