My performance isn't always top-tier- in a crowded section of a 32-player server, I'll drop down to like 30-45 FPS. However, I can barely tolerate a full 24-man, so it's not a problem.
30-45 fps is fully playable :S

Yeah, it's just really weird having the framerate drop from a constant 60+ to 30-40.

I personally limit my FPS to 30 so that it looks smooth to me all the time. After a while in 30 FPS, that just kind of becomes the "standard" smoothness in your head and feels fine.
You can make it look even smoother if you pile on the motion blur, too. I like mat_motion_blur_strength 50.

It'll do the FULL MOTION BLUR ALL ACROSS YOUR SCREEN at the slightest head turn.
Use mat_motion_blur_strength 3 instead; it enhances the effect (so it's actually noticeable)
Everything on high at 1024x768 w/o AA.

I USED TO be able to run on max graphics, but since a couple of the updates ago I have to run on mat_picmip 0 and normal settings, and I still get fps drops.

runs about 50fps but still better than horrible graphics imo.
I play on max, because no matter the settings it doesn't like to run well at all. [I]SHOULD[/I] run fine, but I get like, 10-30fps on rock bottom and on max settings. Playable though.
