Ok, I redid parts of my map, but I have a few questions. Its not that I haven't done research, its that usually most of the guys in the tutorials use complex jargon and / or no pictures to help a complete mapping noob out.
First things first, how come my water looks all buggy and weird? I know there aren't very many maps with lots of water on them, but under the water I can see through solid objects and other things, I'm not sure whats wrong. Its split down the middle in this pic.

I followed the tutorial on how to do the cubemaps for it.
Also, lighting in general. How do I make certain spots darker? Or is it only possible to start in a dark map and make certain spots lighter? I want the interior of my towers and the bottom passages (Im going to use hollowed out shiny "pipes" as it will be in an oil rig.
This is the bottom of my spiral stairway: ( I know I need to fix the cubemaps for the chrome parts of the stairs)

I went here for a tutorial on lighting but they didn't really help me or give enough information on the lighting itself.

Will the lighting add "darkness" around some spots? Because when I used to mess around in Gmod I just messed with lights in dark DARK areas. I'm guessing it has something to do with the skyboxes lighting, but I'm unsure how to fix it.
