not sure about making it so similar to the GL in the set
there aren't really any other two weapons in the game that look so similar
color schemes will be different in comparison. this will also not have the brass bits.
It's the cross and the barrel I'm worried about. First glance I was like "why is he posting this again untextured"

the sight was original different and more simple, ertz wanted some reflection with the grenade launcher however.

we will probably figure something out.
I think the Celtic cross sight was a pretty cool, unique idea, and putting it on both of the weapons kinda ruins that. Dunno what you could put on the sticky launcher instead, though, but I'd reccomend not re-using the Celtic cross.

Please make the ends of the planks extend from the bottom of the barrel a bit, it's so flat now and it'll be in view all the time
Make the sight the spigot of the barrel!
its still wip, so we'll probably touch it up some more.

Does anyone know what's wrong with my UV? I get the weird shapes outside the grid when I do select-all, but when I select everything by hand, they aren't there.

You must have extra faces somewhere in your mesh that you dont know about. First thing to try, go into edit mode and select everything, then click "remove doubles"

There's a button in the UV editor that lets you select vertices/edges/faces based on what you click on the UV. It's the button right next to the vertice/edge/face/island selector, but can't remember what it's called.
Press that, select the odd faces, then check out what's highlighted in the mesh editor.

"keep uv and edit mode mesh selection in sync"
or "that button with a mouse cursor in it"

The button on the left is what he's referring to above:

Hey Guys, just made a thread about TF2Maps.net's 2 new Mapping Contests here: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1350133

Just Cross-posting here on the off chance anyone is interested in helping make a few models here and there for any custom maps. We're the 2 biggest content creating communities for TF2 and I'd love to see us interact with each other more and collaborate generally.
So I'm using my updated Kujang knife to teach myself how to texture. And I feel like I'm doing it totally super wrong:

If it helps, I'm using the brushes/tutorial found here. And I'm using Gimp
you don't wanna make gradients with the stair step pattern. Gradients are just gradients, plain and simple.

Basically the tutorial said to "paint" lighter layers on top of darker layers. How do I get it less gradient-y?
that tutorial sucks, use this one

Ugh, why is this so fucking hard? I feel like I'm going nowhere
EDIT: Probably would help if I didn't forget to post a picture of my attempts. Is this any better?
I still don't know how to make good looking brush strokes, I just lay shit down randomly and erase over and over until I like it
I think my problem is I don't know what "looks good". My reference is the Bushwacka, and I feel like it's not nearly as good as that.
I still don't know how to make good looking brush strokes, I just lay shit down randomly and erase over and over until I like it
I pick base colors, and then add layers of pure black and pure white over it, then change their opacity to like 6%. But otherwise, yeah, like Venezuelan said, just try it until you like it.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad advice
I use a combination of 2-4% brush opacity black and white paint for highlights on a separate layer, and if multiple colors are involved, make another separate layer with one color and smudge the outline until I find the transition satisfactory.
i never use pure black or white for shadowing, which translates to brush strokes in tf2. it's just one of those things i was taught. don't know if it's better or worse though!
Something I've found to look decent is using square brushes, setting the opacity on it low (30~ish%), and enabling color dynamics with fairly high hue and brightness jitter.
Then I select the base color that I'm painting over, add a new layer, select just the area covered by the UV, and try to add uniform patches here or there, using a style similar to the fire axe, where one stroke in the center of a splotch is higher opacity, and has several less opaque strokes behind it.
Then when I'm satisfied that it has a decent coverage, I play around with opacity. This way it has a variety of brightness and hues for the strokes, yet still manages to blend decently.
What about you, Neo? How do you prefer to do it?
Oh god keep talking about this i suck at texturing

Any advice? I've taught myself by studying Primrose's flattened texture for our Shaman's Skull, it's been looking alright for me so far it seems.
