We could do another Arms Race sorta thing.
Arms Race was a contest/Protest for weapons.
This would be better as something like the old updates. Make a Dungeon Crawler for people to click through and find Mod Downloads and a story. (5 main pathes through a Dragons lair with maybe alternate paths branching out to find stuff like a Knights Corpse where you could download the items or a Scenic view of a town that leads to a map Showcase/Download. But that would be REALLY Ambitious.)
last time we had a fake update the host said making the website was a pain
We can easily organize a community update based around this stuff. Just give it its own topic and it'll grow on its own.

Organizing a community update is a lot of work. I'm sure Void would agree. Creating a website to host all the mod downloads, getting all the promo artwork together, getting all the submissions in working order and a standard format, deadlines, etc. Getting it done right and looking professional takes effort. Robotic boogaloo wasn't something as simple as give it it's own topic and it'll grow on its own.

I know that Arms Race was for weapons. If we did something like what AR did, then that would be pretty cool.
We don't need to do so much work for a community update, just make the items and release them as a group.
Doing anything along the lines of the robotic boogaloo obviously seems like aiming too high.
Like I mentioned earlier, something simpler and less grand, like a well presented themed collection of items with nice collective promo renders and maybe a simple sfm short or something seems more like what we should be aiming for.
Then again if some people feel really dedicated it might just turn into another community update, who knows.
People at least seem interested in making it a thing
this is just me, but how will they be released? will everyone be given a chance or is it going to be picky and long & hard.
if you guys want another community event, Medieval part 2 is a pretty boring subject for it imo
if you guys want another community event, Medieval part 2 is a pretty boring subject for it imo
thats because we are boring people, joe.

Its at least more interesting than yet another summer/winter/halloween rush
plus the last medieval thing was super long ago

I agree. and the only thing that is inspiring us to do this is just a good few concepts for some hats and miscs.
What about a kinda 'what if these where the first items made' thing.
Like, imagine none of the items in the game existed yet. You're Mann Co. And you've been contracted to make custom gear for 9 mercenaries, and the only thing you know about them is their role; one is a Scout, one is an Engineer, etc.
I dunno, I just think it'd be nice to see what people come up with without pandering to x trend or x personality trait

the thing is 1) those rushes will happen anyway (because they have a higher success rate than medieval items) and 2) medieval items have been made at a decent rate for a long time outside of the contest, to the point where people actually are getting sick of demo armor, for instance
I mean don't let that stop you guys from trying but I doubt the interest is there from modelers. Pretty much all of the community updates sprung organically from some new thing and medieval is old news
Or maybe a cool community thing would be like time periods. You could have like Egyptian items, Cowboy/Indian items, World War 2 items, Pirates, Cavemen, Renaissance, Vikings...instead of just focusing on the Medieval time period. But I guess this would almost be no different than what we do anyways...
or...Dinky Sci Fi items. Valve has been hinting about some moon space stuff....:v:

Seems more generic as that's something a lot of people already try do do a lot of the time, and it's not that flexibile of a theme so wouldn't allow for much in terms of variation

I guess so.
What about something focusing on really lavish items then?
I mean, the mercs get paid a shitload of money, it might be fun to imagine what they'd do with it in regards to their gear.

if it's not something that organically develops it pretty much needs to be a contest to get anyone into it
we need mod comp back

Maybe like themed stuff. Like for example if it was like jungle warfare themed or something you would get like pith helmets and sniper rifles, machete type sets or like One Man Army type stuff. Everyone competing making sets that all fit in the same period or setting.
Full sets like we used to get like this

Bunch of themed stuff like this would be awesome for SFM and maps and nice for cosmetic fun and weapons would be a plus. Just brainstorming though.
Might be worth mentioning I personally stay away from community events, to me it mostly feels limiting, but since i've already got a couple medieval themed sets concepted, and since i might draw a couple more, i'd gladly take part if it became a thing.

I'd love to see an Old Western themed one.

For the past few competitions people have been donating a ton of prizes, both Arms Race and The Vehicles one have enough for about 6 prizes.

Well that's the thing thing, it could be a Medieval comp one month then some other thing the next. All themed competitions over a period.
i don't get the whole "demo has too much medieval armor" argument, especially considering he only has 1 set of medieval armor, with several different hats, and 1 set of samurai armor. Usually variety is a good thing.
I'd be up for 'Sci Fi' and 'Film Noire-ish' themed stuff too, got content for both
Can I take this time again to say the spytech idea was popular a while back for a booga-two-esque thing. Spytech is completely underrated, fits the game perfectly and looks beautiful.

harder to do though, i've seen a lot of people struggle to make stuff with that theme
Well that's the thing, iff it was a competition of some sort you could have different on going themes, like "Spytech", Medieval, Wild West, Noir ect.,then winners like, "Best Overall", then 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners of each themed thing. We would just need to unanimously agree to this then pick a good host if we were up for it.
But regardless there was some good Medieval concepts shown and shouldn't go to waste.
harder to do though, i've seen a lot of people struggle to make stuff with that theme
I remember when we talked about that I worked on a quick concept for a Robotic Mind Control-Esque collar since I could think of nothing for Spytech that would fit as a hat or Misc.
I agree that a Time Travel one could be interesting, But I also put that we could still stick to medieval and do it in a more Dungeons and Dragons theme/ Fantasy where we can toss Elves and Trolls and Dragons in. Maybe be cheap and make updated models for some of the older weapons and hats.
or...Dinky Sci Fi items. Valve has been hinting about some moon space stuff....:v:
ohhh, it almost waxes me almost nostalgic of the Modcomp. Even if I'm a useless piece of shit who doesn't model, it's fun as hell watching. I don't give two shits about vehicles, but the Vehicle Comp is entertaining as hell.
I guess I'll claim this, I've had the exact same idea for a while now.
he's going to trip and fall
