If you hadn't of said cello previously I wouldn't know what the grey outline parts are. It looks way too forced, like you just slapped on a cello outline.
that is basically all that electric cellos are:

I never knew there was such a thing as an electric cello.

okay, but why would there be a minigun made out of a electric cello? i am aware there are weapons ingame that are quite strange, but the one you drew up doesn't relate to the theme of the set you're trying to make, doesn't go with the characters over all theme, and looks generally disappealing. the set itself looks like a knock off of the Black Market business set, and the gun has many noticeable similarities to the tomislav. changing the shapes around and trying to play it off with a "new theme" doesn't justify using another persons idea.

Funny enough, you've probably heard one in TF2 though: the Vita-Saw's taunt makes it sound like an electric cello.
I have small problem with setting materials. I need to make one part of the model more metallic or transparent, so to do that I need those polygons to be different material ID, right? So thats what I did, but, now after importing SMD into workshop it only recognize 1 material, and after reimporting the same file into 3ds max its just 1 material ID.. somehow Im losing material ID when exporting to SMD, is there any trick to do here? here's image of my model and ID settings in max
http://s21.postimg.org/9svpvpd7a/harp.jpg as you can see button is set to ID 2, rest of model is set to ID 1

The Question should be, Why not? its like you disapprove of thinking outside of the box. Mafia often hid weapons in violin cases, and that has already been done quite well, so i did the next best thing, which was the instrument itself.

This would imply that the black market heavy guys invented the Mafia or Thompsons. Just because something is similar or based off the same inspiration, doesn't mean its the same.

I'd say it's more like the size of a bass than a cello.
Yes, I know I'm nitpicking, but when it comes to basses and cellos I can't help it. :v:

there is no problem with thinking outside the box, especially if it had looked good. and i never said he invented the mafia or tommy's, but i mean why slap on a weird wire frame for a instrument that probably wasn't even around in that era onto a mingun. if you really want to do the next best thing, make it look like a actual cello. the fact that you had to explain and post pictures of the wep was based off of clearly shows that some people didnt know what it was right of the bat, where as alot of the weps in game, even the outlandish ones, can be identified for what they are.
even if it in some way relates to the time, the design is overall unappealing.
The "Theremin Cello" being one of the earliest of its kind, was created in the 1930s. Electric pickups and the like date back to 1924. Synthesizers that could imitate the sounds of most instruments were very common in the 1950s-1960s.
Around the perfect time period for it to easily work in tf2, seeing as the game takes place in the late 1960s-early 1970s

Hey, I'm having some trouble with the workshop importer tool. Whenever I try to select a base texture for my item, I get this. The model itself is fine in the preview, it just has the usual pink checkerboard instead of a texture. Things I've tried so far: setting different materials to the model (and trying without one) in max, exporting as .fbx and .smd, different textures, using a plain cube instead of a model, trying both .tga and .pdf for textures, adding and removing alphas to/from the texture, messing around with the skin importer settings. Everything with the model is fine, it attaches right where it's supposed to without any trouble, but once I get to the texture, I hit a brick wall. Any clue what could be causing this?

is your game updated fully? try verifying your game cache.

It's set to auto update, so it should be. Tried verifying the game cache, everything validated successfully without any trouble

The electric cello idea is far too modern for TF2 IMO.

That changes it from being the shape of a cello to just being a gun slapped on a cello, which makes less sense and doesn't look good

But you're using a modern design for an electric cello. Not the classic design of a theramin.

Even modern theramins are nothing like your concept. You've drawn a modern electric cello.

that's probably because a theramin cello and an electric cello are separate things, both of which existed back then. Electric Cellos, guitars and etc all existed then and were decently popular. The theremin is merely an example of how far back similar things and the like existed.
[sp]bonus points for the fact that time period restraints can easily be nullified by the fact that in this game, Australia is years ahead of our modern civilization.[/sp]

That still doesn't change the fact that you drew a MODERN ELECTRIC CELLO. The original electric cellos used the hollow body of an actual cello anyway.
Stop.
Even if you don't intend it in a mean way, don't make items relate to eachother. It discourages whoever is making the item.
It was absolutely not meant in a discouraging way i just thought i'd post a link to my hood (should have commented on it too ^^) so feel free to make it like you want, it's not even my concept so i don't really mind about another one.

Well sorry for wanting to stick to the right era for the game. That electric cello is still too damn modern, doesn't fit, and just overall looks bad.

You don't have to be a dick about it though, it's one minor anachronism. The damn Team Fortress universe is full of them.
