I might note I'm really glad with their stylistic transition from cinematic trailers to film-style shorts. it's a breath of fresh air with their SFM content.

But really there's several reasons why the scale, for one thing the tools can't be any bigger or they'd clip too badly through the belly with most animations, it still clips a bit but it was a compromise between clipping vs acceptable scale.
That's as small as I could make them while still looking plausible and proportional to the character, I am fairly certain there are wrenches and screwdrivers of all sizes.
You also don't want cosmetics to look like they are weapons, Valve actually tends to discard (no matter how good they look) any cosmetics that could be mistaken for a weapon, hence keeping it simple and small.
Just now realizing, since this doesnt seem to be a space update thing, doesnt that mean we still have time for space items?

I see the knee pad part working, the whole shin part looks impractical and not sturdy at all because you only made one strap.
Perhaps make the shin guards stand seperate from the knee part and actually attach it to his shin?
my knee-shin combo pads have an additional set of straps under the calf, as well as additional set of straps above the kneecaps, which when worn wrap behind the knee and share space there with the set of straps you already modeled. even with all these straps to keep them in place, they still slide down when i sprint too much.
and yeah, yours would look nice if the shin portions taper more as they extend down to the ankles.
