Here, look. -stuff- It's usually best to avoid going for colors like jade, lime, or anything neon, unless the object is meant to be lit. Even if you are going for a saturated look, it's still a really good idea to try and make the item about the same color as the pre-existing palette. That way it doesn't detract too much from the character or stand out any more than it needs to.
yeah I noticed this with the jade and decided to go with a sort of washed out emerald.

Here is a cowboy scout set I started working on. Got the rigging done. Really just have to give it a proper texture. Might make one more misc too if I can think of one.

Open would let it look nice with a wider variety of cosmetics.
So turns out Natko appeared in here, posted saying he had permission, when asked about it just ran away. Heh. Also i know i'm kind of late, for some reason i wasn't subscribed and it had 500 posts unreaded
hey, this may be old news, but wasn't larolaro looking to retexture the softcap to look like the concept camo version? was that ever done?

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=13596 edit: shrunk the promo. you're welcome. Also, the mod doesnt have the attached headphones for some reason, and the milkman replacement doesnt have paintablility, for obvious reasons. think of it as a demo.

the problem with that palette (the second part of it) is that actually discourages people from using colors that would suit their items and actually think about what would benefit them the most. while those greys are sampled from valve-made weapons, the reason behind having so many diferent shades of grays is probably because each weapon was developed as individual items. I have always suspected that the colors picked for the paint cans was the result of someone picking colors from their hexadecimal values rather than from a careful though (would explain the team colored versions being sampled from the already ingame colors). however, you're always free to use them as a reference but it has to be made clear that that it is not "TF2's palette" and you're not confined/meant to work within those colors.
They still give an idea about what appropriate color is though. Yeah you can make your own shades of brown and great but clearly jade is out of the question unless you have a really good reason, and if you do put it next to these colors and adjust it until it fits in as best as possible Ikes basically just said "green cause yolo" and did it without rhyme or reason. It's an odd color even in real life let alone the highly stylized universe of TF2
Generally speaking, you can pretty safely select colors towards the center of the palette: The main thing to avoid is oversaturated colors, white, and black, which coincidentally are the edges and corners. You're definitely not limited to the widely acclaimed TF2 palette of colors, however it is an excellent starting point in choosing what to use.

The Crafty hair is a garish yellow. the cobber chameleon is a bright green. the rather festive tree is an obnoxious green and white. the magical mercenary is a cornea-frying pink. it seems like these color palettes you speak of are getting less and less of a rule and more of a considerable guideline with each update. anyways, the jade i chose wasnt even that strong to begin with and blends well with the blue of the hat.
You should really look at some of the feedback people give you, it helps.
or maybe some of you are wrong for once??? seriously i dont see the huge fuss.
Feedback is important, so when people criticize your work, you shouldn't get agitated. People gave you some good feedback on how to improve the coloring on the glasses, or that the hat should be less jagged. No one is really wrong or right, and sure its your item, but theres no need to be negative about it.

[editline]23rd May 2014[/editline] god why do i even stay here all of you are just cocky.
Facepunch can be a harsh environment, but it's more genuine and less bullshit. People aren't going to sugar-coat and say your item looks great, if it really does not. If you can't handle the heat in the kitchen, then get out. People are trying to help you get your items in-game, and ultimately help you improve.
Ikes basically just said "green cause yolo" and did it without rhyme or reason.
at this point ikes seems more likely an idiot who only acknowledges the feedback that suits him well and ignore everything else despite the majority of us explaining in detail why it looks bad/doesnt work/its unnapealing. sure, you can go all out and do whatever you want with your work since its your time and you're pretty much entitled to listen whatever you want. but why ignore everyone when you're the one who came here and ask for feedback. the color choices on those glases are terrible and doesnt suit anything on tf2 at all, but if he goes out and say "the superfan is lime" and "that other thing is ugly", who are we to tell him what he should do? its not the first time someone comes over and simply goes all out having his own taste and shit despite the general feedback agaisnt it. if i've learned anything over my years of work as an game artist is that when people have that attitude there is nothing you can do about it because its the way they think.
