Cultural context.
In a perfect world, sexual objectification of men and women would be equally bad or equally ok, depending on your view of sexual objectification as a general phenomenon. (I personally have no problem with it as such).
In the actual world though, the idea of the woman as an object of male desire permeates large portions of basically every part of human culture in both overt and subtle, conscious and unintentional ways, and it's been like that throughout basically all of history, whereas the opposite is comparatively uncommon.
In this context, hypersexualized depictions of women become part of this giant societal[I] thing[/I] that a whole bunch of people feel oppressed, dehumanized or just kind of sick of. Hypersexualized depictions of men, on the other hand are.. Well, it can be debated, but a lot of people see them as a welcome subversion.
I'm aware that I've dragged gender politics into this thread twice in two days now, and I apologize for it. Hopefully I won't do it again anytime soon.
