Quick thing about the lighting, Since the Muzzle flash would be making the majority of the light in the image, that side of the soldier should be lit up more, instead of darker. Other than that Not bad for a first. Posing and facial expression are pretty good, Throw a smoke particle on that stogie and call it a day.

the muzzle flash is the strongest lightsource on that. even if there's a lamp directly pointing at soldier at that moment, on that particular frame the flash would still be strong enough to cast a highlight on his body.
