You could join along simply by double clicking G mate.
Only one guy in the server needs to own the taunt so that everyone else can join along.

So this happened to me today, presumably because I angered the bread gods of some such.

I couldn't leave. On top of moving slower than usual, pressing escape did nothing as did any other menu option. And then, just like that, the round was over and it was back to normal.
