I thought this was about an angry mom telling her son off for staying up late, but then the actual description and intention of the video ruined the whole thing for me.
It would've been so much funnier if it was actually about that, she even screams "BEEEED!!", what a way to drop the ball there.
So, Saxxy voting time. How would you rate those entries that have flashy animations but no plot whatsoever?
Also, where's the 'meh' option when you need one. I hate how i keep generating the same entries in my queue.
On the topic of the Saxxy's, i'm bothered by the randomized selection of 10 videos rather than just showing all of the videos that are available in that category
if i counted correctly there was only about 200 entries this year
It feels like there was more last year ._.
On the topic of the Saxxy's, i'm bothered by the randomized selection of 10 videos rather than just showing all of the videos that are available in that category
i believe this is to keep the chances fair for everyone entered, rather than increasing the chances of someones video never being at the top
(you can generate a queue by category by the way still)
Wait, where can we see all of the saxxy entries?
nvm: i'm stoopid
nevermind again there are only ~15 videos shown for me

From his YouTube channel
Blizzard and Insomniac
Seeing he's a guy who worked on the Ratchet and Clank games, which, mind you, was the pinnicle of smooth and cartoony animation in games ever since 2002, he most likely has the most experience in 3D animation out of any SFM maker on YouTube.

I don't think anyone was questioning his experience?
Nope punchy, nobody was.

That looks like a scene from Tom and Jerry.

Well, I still rate most of the ones that are animated and technically done well with a YES, although some of them obviously aren't good enough plot/humor/atmosphere - wise to warrant wanting them to win anything. I wish we could give more than 1 vote to the ones that we deem to be a cut above most entries. There's a huge difference imo between the decent and the really good entries that the voting system doesn't really allow us to express.
There's only really a few dozen videos worth a damn tbh, I was lucky (or was it on purpose and not as randomly generated as you'd think?) that pretty much all the good/decent ones (including many of the making-a-splash ones I saw before the voting started) were part of the first 5 or 6 queue lists that I was offered.
Anyway, not to sound too mean or antyhing, but a certain author that got mocked last year for her cheesiness and the whole dead lover cliche managed to make even the re-creation of the ending of Half-Life 1 feel devoid of any real story or meaning... A lot of people like it for sentimental reasons, but it's just lots of cheesy rock music, some dreamy Xen landscapes and some very boring action.

Right, my bad, all that talk and no actual video in a Media thread, sorry. Embedded it in my above post.

This isn't bad because it's just the HL1 ending. It's bad because it's slowmo bullshit with unfitting music, excess bloom, too much dreaminess and too little plot. I'm sure the other video was mocked for the exact same reasons. If somebody were to recreate this video with the proper audio and length, I'm sure it would be way better.

Thats the Black Mesa soundtrack, and its amazing what are you talking about cheesy for
Thats the Black Mesa soundtrack, and its amazing what are you talking about cheesy for
The music is fine, it's just that it's not really fitted for the video... I remember when I heared this music in Black Mesa game, it fitted almost perfectly with the current gameplay (also, my favorite one is the map with "We've got hostiles" music, it's wonderful)
Why are we discussing Half Life SFMs in the TF2 Media thread

Questionable Ethics 1 and Surface Tension 1 were not only hands down the best piece of music in the entire game but also some of the best moments. Black Mesa overall was top notch, and...

...Oh yeah.
Saxxies
Of all the things to try and add sentimentality to, they chose the most emotionally dead section of HL1, pitting an emotionless protagonist against an enemy that the player has no emotional attachment to whatsoever. It could only be more jarring if it was about Adrian Shepard fighting the worm thing.
i was kinda surprised she didn't upload an entry this year, but aparently she claims that her collab team dropped out and had to rush things in order to meet the deadline.
wich is pretty much the same excuse as always: things getting rushed for the sake of delivering, rather than developing.
i'll be a shame if this gets into the nominees of this year, again. it shows how much of it its not even a matter of it being rushed but instead the lack of interest of actually developing some kind of knowledge about the basics of animation (as seen, for example, on that weird animation of gordon jumping into the boss).

more like it will show how pathetically dry the drama category is. defect is the only drama i recall doing it relatively right without being femscout/muh best friend dies and i fall into depression, or kungfus DEEP SPIRITUAL VOLUMETRIC LIGHTING AND ODDLY FEMENINE MOVEMENTS ON MALE CHARACTERS
Thats because drama alone usually ends being a generic soap opera.
Drama is much more than merely "something bad happens oh noes" -its a subtle yet enjoyable combination between comedy and tragedy.
Defect does this well by means of presenting a character who you can feel related to, and symphatize in his quest for independence, all of this thanks to the comedy that is his struggle to exit the system -then inmediately deliver the tragedy that is losing the one who was the only one who managed to sympatize with him to the world that was out there to destroy him, eventually leading to his unavoidable fate - a tragedy at its finest.

most people think, however, that drama is merely killing femscout to let your inner devil go wild.
my main problem w the drama catagory is that you cant very well do drama with tf2 yaoi hands
my main problem w the drama catagory is that you cant very well do drama with tf2 yaoi hands
I don't know, i imagine plenty of traumatic things could be done with those hands.
Oh, dramatic. same thing.
Speaking of drama, I thought this one had some good potential, despite the clumsy execution.
