Soldier's "Gravity Nooooooo!" line gets me every time.
I feel like a lot of people have a habit of trying to apply conventions from certain things to completely different things without regard for the appropriateness of doing this. I see this happen a lot with the mercs.
All gameplay in TF2 comes in the form of multiplayer matches set in a collection of static maps with no overarching chronology. In accordance with this, the game heavily emphasizes style and setting but has basically no inherent plot. The playable characters come in the form of nine completely different but (in theory) equally viable classes, all of which are available from the start. The game is intuitive and entertaining enough to appeal to casual players, but also offers a lot of depth.
The mercs are made in a way that perfectly complements these things. They're exaggerated to emphasize their different playstyles and provide humor to the game, but constrained enough to fit the (as mentioned, important) style and setting of the game, which can be described as stylized but not cartoonish. There is no hierarchy of any kind between the characters. No one is more important, more good, more evil, more generic or anything like that, they're just different [I]types[/I]. Their personalities are apparent from the start and there's no character development, but there are enough subtle undertones and depth to them to keep them interesting even after the novelty is gone.
People then see these well-crafted characters and enjoy them without knowing why, and proceed to squeeze them into molds designed for completely different types of works. And that's how we end up with painfully simplified exaggerations (LOL HEAVY IS FAT AND DUMB AND POOTIS SANDVICH), misguided idealizations (Yo check out my badass cyberpunk assassin Sniper!), adaptations based on superficial traits (Demoman has an eyepatch and drinks whiskey so he's totally a pirate you guys) and... Whatever combination of words you'd use to describe all that goddamned manga-styled fanart.

The only cosplay I would dare do would be pyro, because you wouldn't need too much effort to act like the character, because there's pretty much nothing we know about the pyro except the whole pyroland thing. Also because mask for obvious reasons :v:
I tried to be the Pyro for Halloween last year. Unfortunately, my small group of friends decided that they wanted to go see a movie that day... If I had worn it, I probably would've gotten arrested, so now I'm just saving it for a better time, perhaps college

If you want to be an authentic Pyro, you need to have kind of a husky build, just like authentic Snipers ought to be tall and lanky
