He wasn't arguing it was good against pro players. He was arguing it was effective.
Effective if you're playing against idiots who have no idea how to kill a bouncing soldier who has only a shotgun and a melee weapon, i guess? It might be effective, but when you're comparing it to other rocket launchers it's LESS effective, which is the point of this thread. To discuss which one is the most effective. A soldier who cannot deal blast damage is worthless and gimmicky.
I'm talking about primary weapons. Melee isn't really something that you define a class by.
So the Spy's knife, the only weapon in the game that is guaranteed to give a one-shot kill unless the opposing player somehow has invulnerability, the only melee that is iconic to its class(in more ways than one), does not define him.

And the spy only has 2 knife variants anyhow, both of which have their uses. Depends on how you play spy, really. Are we going to have a thread about the best spy knife? Because i guarantee the default one will win anyhow. The YER has a vastly different playstyle, which a lot of pubbie spies have yet to even consider learning.
Are we going to have a thread about the best spy knife?
What? No, that's a terrible idea. I agree the stock knife is the best overall, although personally I play around with the YER on the rare occasions I actually play Spy, but the stock knife is considerably better. The main point I was trying to make is that you sound like a self-centered jackass who thinks he knows everything about the game, and that you need to learn when to lurk and just use ratings.
True toss up between stock and black box. I probably lean that much more to the stock, since I like using the banners, and you can't really use them in conjunction with the black box.
Tone is difficult to convey over text and will often be substituted by pre-existing notions of the reader. Remember to always give the benefit of the doubt. Against crowds, the Black Box may increase your survivability just enough to synergise with the Batallion's Backup, though the loss of a backup weapon is a heavy penalty in conjunction with one less loaded rocket.

Increased sentry damage resistance is worthless if you only have 3 rockets to fire at the sentry.
Theoretically speaking you could tank damage for a while with a medic against a crowded engie nest before he pops the uber, allowing for maximum time for demomen to take down the nest. Practically speaking, its effectiveness is about restricted to mini sentries at most.
Named and soon to describe my default Rocket Launcher. It's definitely what I call a good weapon.
I don't like people who use the black box as a straight upgrade
I like the black box, but I've been going back to original rocket launcher lately. So I like a bit of both. (No DH, I can't aim worth a fuck.)
If they are skilled enough to be able to overcome the lack of fourth rocket, they deserve it.
If they are skilled enough to be able to overcome the lack of fourth rocket, they deserve it.
Has little do to with skill. Black Box and RL has their advantages regardless of skill level.
My favorite is the Direct Hit since I'm more of the guy who will shoot the enemy from long range accurately and the faster rocket definitely helps. Though I admit, IMO the Black Box sucks.
Has little do to with skill. Black Box and RL has their advantages regardless of skill level.
To use it as a direct upgrade requires the ability to completely nullify the penalty of the reduced magazine size.
Soldier is my least played class, so I don't have an specific Rocket Launcher preference. I switch between all them from time to time, but for some reason I like to use the Black Box. Maybe it's just because I'm terribad as Soldier :v: About the other weapons, Shotgun (and always Shotgun) and Shovel/Pain Train
direct hit
I personally like the back box it seems to do more dmg than the regular launcher for me + getting hp = ftw
derrec heet erry day
Here's a hint for everyone who thinks it's a good idea to make these dumb threads: the stock weapons are hands down the best weapons because they are balanced to be a well-rounded weapon suitable for the class using them. All unlocks are either given situational buffs or have their mechanics completely overhauled so that they operate for a completely different purpose.
Aw shit, I thought it said 'Autistic'. Bad Spelling +1
Rocket Launcher. The upsides of the Direct Hit/Black Box aren't enough to make up for their downsides.
Default Rocket Launcher Then the Direct Hit Then every other weapon in the game Then the Black Box
I don't play Soldier but my view is that Black Box is the best one.
I personally like the back box it seems to do more dmg than the regular launcher for me + getting hp = ftw
Black Box does the exact same amount of damage so you just happen to be doing more damage by luck or skill. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
I don't play Soldier but my view is that Black Box is the best one.
Then why the fuck do you have a view? You should actually try out every weapon before making a comment on which you think is best. The Black Box is the Rocket Launcher expect with less ammo but you get healed with each hit you get. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline]
Rocket Launcher. I switch between the direct hit and default rocket launcher
Meh.. it's situational between the rocket launcher and black box if I feel the need for the hp, I go for black box, though I like the normal rocket launcher much more. Doesn't look so clunky and shit black box is not an upgrade.. it's imo a more nonskill approach for soldier. but, like i said, sometimes i use it, not often though. took me quite a few months to find the black box too :v:
Direct hit is way better if you know what you're doing.
I don't know, the faster rocker speed on the Direct Hit is pretty nice.
Actually, even though I got a feeling of some incoming box ratings, the Direct Hit is actually OP if something is. Now, it doesn't strike as an OP weapon ofc most of the time, but if in very good hands it is a straight upgrade. reasoning for this is for example the fact that it's banned in competitive gaming, or so i've been told
