As for the interview, if you work at valve, can't you just ask about it with some of your co-workers or your higher ups?

Nope.
Excuse me id just like to point out something probably going to be a problem with all these designs.
They don't match the size or shape of the existing models. You said this was a stylized choice, and referenced the pre-existing female models almost saying they where bad because they matched the body shape. There is a reason for this. And its the hit boxes.
If your not building them into models like the title suggests then there just poorly drawn and thought through.

Thank you for at least being civil. Everyone who is laboring under the idea that these are intended to be real, working, playable, in-game models, listen up.
I've got good news for you. I've never had plans to build these as models. I might in some unforeseeable future, but right now I don't. I don't know how to model or code, and according to you guys, I can barely draw above the level of a 2 year old. God help me if I try to hold a fork by myself.
But that's not why I'm deciding not to make these playable. In fact, I had no plans to do so because, besides Alia's Spy, I think the female reskins are quite hideous and ungainly. Pretty faces on primate bodies.
I despise the idea of re-skinning old models to make them female, actually, and that's what I think people were expecting me to do. Not to sound pompous (especially now, after I've just finished being pompous, amirite?), but simply designing them to be re-skinned is stifling and obnoxiously dull. Kind of like my experience here!
Because of this, I had imagined them to be part of a sequel to TF2, not just modifications to the existing models, because in a sequel, things would be updated, reprogrammed, new things would be added, and you would probably have a scenario where a team could feasibly create new models, if they're doing it right. Now don't misunderstand, I have no allusions about being hired to work on a sequel, nor am I going to take on the task of creating one. That's silly. I have classes to attend and midterms coming up.
These are just drawings and ideas I had that I never intended to take beyond the concept phase.
What bothers me about re-skinning a male model is that even if you get the hips to look right (and trust me, the Heavy model looks far from right), a woman isn't going to have huge hands like the male characters. Look at the models for Scout's mom and the Announcer in Garry's Mod. Both have hands that are almost regularly sized, perhaps a bit larger, but not nearly to the degree as the playable classes. Men tend to have big hands and women don't, and the men in this game are nearly all caricatured to some degree to accentuate their "masculine" features, so simply creating a re-skin of the existing models as women just makes them look gangly and goofy. I'll probably give my HWGirl bigger hands and maybe beef up the arms a bit, but as far as I'm concerned, (at least for my designs, I don't care what other people do with theirs) these "concepts" of mine are intended to have a similar style to this game, but they aren't ever going to be playable and I probably won't get them past the drawing stage.
These aren't being produced as playable models or are intended to be designs for a fabricated sequel, so don't expect them to be. I like the advice I got on the perspective and the proportions, and even the criticisms on the Engineer's costume. I'll try to fix the things Vman critiqued. Maybe I'll give her a few slight retouches, like I said, but I'm going to keep Heavy Weapon Gal's general body shape, that's the ONE THING I'm keeping, and if you don't like it, that's tough titty. If you want, you can post other designs. Nobody's stopping you. I didn't intend for this to become the Dippy Thread.
Perhaps you should all just settle down a bit with the frantic "SHE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE HEAVY" or the "I'M NOT PLAYING THAT CHARACTER!" from last night. Good news, you won't have to! She's not Ivan and she's not even going to be playable, and I don't expect myself or anyone else to make her playable. Have I said this enough now? Settle. The fuck. Down.
Christ.
Is it too late to ask for a little civility, or am I branded as a troublemaker?
Alright, two things. First, I apologize, because my behavior was not exactly exemplary earlier either.
Second: A suggestion.
For your female Demo, assuming you make one, try basing her off Mrs. Degroot.

I still have no idea what I'm going to do for Demo OR Pyro, but I like your suggestion. Instead of his daughter being the Scout, his mom can be the other Demo.

I chose Mrs. Degroot because she's her own character with her own personality, like you want, but she's still close enough to regular Demo to fulfill my crazy fanboyism.
And I could totally see her working as a character, reprimanding the other classes as domination taunts... except is she actually blind?
And I could totally see her working as a character... except is she actually blind?
Well, yeah. I said 'base on', so you can take some creative liberties. Plus, doing such would make the design more 'yours', so to speak.
This thread has thoroughly entertained me.
Good job, chaps.
Oh, sniiide attitude! :O!! I'm just replying the way you've been replying to me, but I could see how you'd find it offensive when I do it back to you. Give what you get.
You folks need lessons in socialization about as badly as I need lessons in proportion. Good god.
If you had good social skills, you never would have had troubles from the beginning of this thread.
Lets look at some of your exceptionally friendly posts from the beginning of the thread:
It's all right, take it slow. We'll get through this! Breathe! Brreeeeathe!

I can't say anything to this without it being venomously sarcastic.

Hi, I'm an official concept artist for Valve and these are real concept designs that we'll be releasing next summer. Here, have a hat!

See that, Biodude? This is a critique.

Perhaps you should try standing up more often. Helps pump the blood to those vital areas.
You are not in an art forum. You shouldn't expect full critiques from every poster. Most people will post with their initial gut feeling. So when someone goes "Holy crap this looks awful" rather than acting like a brat and mocking them, actually try to act civil.
People treat you the way you treat them, as you so ironically said.
You were also being condescending to biodude even though he gave a perfectly valid critique. He was legitimately confused by your character's designs and attempted to explain why they were confusing.
You have to listen to the people who see something wrong in your work. You can't just go and say "well that's how they're going to be so deal with it" because, as far as I'm concerned, you made these pictures for other people to see, and for other people to enjoy. If you make something that only you will enjoy, and you write off every criticism about their design as "trolling" then why did you bother posting it in a public forum to begin with?
"Snide attitude," he says. Haha.
I can't tell if you were trying to prove my point or not.
Finally, to complete the set:

There's a difference between responding to negativity in a negative way and being a jerk right off the bat.
The "we'll get through this" was a humerus attempt to brush off the insults the image was getting, the "venomously sarcastic" was my response to people not having bothered to read what I had written, meant in a way that wasn't meant to cause confrontation, and the rest? I felt increasingly cornered. I don't like feeling like the odd man out, despite being "fine" with being an oddball. I don't think anyone does.
I admit I went over the line quickly, but you guys were using me as a punching bag. You should at least admit to that.
You are not in an art forum. You shouldn't expect full critiques from every poster. Most people will post with their initial gut feeling. So when someone goes "Holy crap this looks awful" rather than acting like a brat and mocking them, actually try to act civil.
I shouldn't have to pick up after other people's rudeness. I DID try to respond to people in a non-confrontational way, but the negativity kept flowing in and it didn't last long.
If you guys don't like being insulted, don't insult me. That's the rule I live by, and you'll notice I've never returned a friendly gesture with spit and venom.
People treat you the way you treat them, as you so ironically said.
Right, you get what you give. They spat in my eye, and I spat back. I can be perfectly civil if you're willing to be.
You were also being condescending to biodude even though he gave a perfectly valid critique. He was legitimately confused by your character's designs and attempted to explain why they were confusing.
Yeah, I was. I apologize, Biodude. I felt cornered and I was already striking at people.

I would never call legitimate criticism "trolling" and this was no exception. I was legitimately grateful to receive your critiques as well as Humblerbee's suggestions. I called personal attacks aimed at me and my pictures "trolling," which as far as I'm concerned, implying that I'm just as bad as some douchebag on Deviantart who scribbles Sonic recolors or anime in MS Paint constitutes an insult, i.e. trolling. I need LOTS of improvement, I know that, but I'm not terrible, and my pictures aren't terrible.
And I decided to keep their physiques because I'm not actually going to do anything with them. As I stated in my long-ass post up there, these aren't going to go past the concept art phase. They're just ideas I have that I jot down.
Finally, to complete the set:

My only response is that she's meant to be leaning on an undesigned sentry, so she's shifting her weight onto that. Otherwise I can absolutely understand your critiques and I'll work on them next time.
I won't be redrawing these pictures, I'll just be doing front and side views.
No sarcasm or rudeness from me this time- I am grateful for your advice and I appreciate the criticism. Thank you.
Alright, I've got my critiques.
Heavy - Heavy doesn't really feel like a Merc here to me. Male Heavy has a huge Ammo belt slinged across his chest, along with a massive kevlar vest thing. FemHeavy has no ammo, a puny little minigun, and a comically sized vest.
Scout - I get that you're trying to make the classes different. I get that. But simply copying the Demoman and making him the scout isn't especially different. Also, the kilt is strange. I dunno. Something about it.
Engineer - I actually kinda like this one. Something about it just kinda works. As some before have said, a little bit to "busy" on the model. As I'm sure you've seen, all 9 original classes are fairly simple.
And these aren't the worst fem classes. Keep in mind THESE exist.

Ludicrious. Oversexed characters that wouldn't last a second in combat.
I think the reason ChemicalAlia's designs are so popular, is that they are similar and have the feel of the Original 9, but have unique things that seperate them.
Also, gonna leave this here. It might not be 100% relevant to these 3, but it's a guide of sorts.

My personal favorite fem classes

And finally, my favorite fem Class TF2 picture ever.
-Sexy as all hell, but not oversexed
-Retains a lot of the Original Scout's design
-Still has a unique feel
-Did I mention sexy

You gave me helpful design tips (the "Why your Female OC is a bad idea" especially) and you weren't rude or confrontational about it. I appreciate that a lot, given the nature of this thread. Thank you.
Note: The ammo across male Heavy's chest became a belt for my Heavy, but it's hard to see because the minigun is in the way.

I can't see what he's saying... uuuunless someone quotes his post.
I'm done arguing with him. If he wants to argue bicker over trivialities, he can take it to Private Messages. He doesn't need to spam up my thread just because he's got to have the last word.
If you're going to try to get female classes in TF2, at least make them realistic. Realistic clothing, realistic proportions, no freaking makeup, earrings, or high heels for fucks sake.
Don't give them all D cup breasts, either...just make their torso slightly different, maybe just enough to look feminine.
Oh, and don't give them all weird poofy hair. That would clip badly with all of the hats...just give them realistic looking hair.
With how Valve's been hulk smashing the art style left and right, they just might add female mercs eventually, but I wouldn't mind it if they were realistic and not huge titted whores with guns...maybe then that would placate the female "Activists" that hate TF2 for only having men in it.
Then again, once female mercs make it into the game, they'll call it a woman beating simulator as well.
