Team Fortress 2 Lore Discusssion: We make sense out of a hat-simulator

So now we need to pin-point the time frame in which the vid took place. I assume it's either non-canon or it took place before MvM.

When the medic is doing his death calculations he says something about them having used the teleporters for 4 years. I'm not really sure if this is of any use though.

This would place the short at around 18 months before Gray Mann emerges
According to this post this video was a reworked script for a scrapped show that fell through so it may not really even be intended to fit into the canon

Actually I believe it does fit the canon. The intels were stolen not by enemy teams, but by some unknown people, which means it doesn't contradict the end of Gravel Wars. Besides, Ring of Fired won't become canon up until last issue (which will, most likely, result in an event update), so that means it's okay for the team to be together in the video. I believe it takes some place during MvM event, but prior to RoF. Scout saying "we're not dating" doesn't equal to "we have never had a date", which means Pauling is too busy to date Scout and that's why he's mad. So yeah, nothing contradicts the fact that Expiration Date is canon.
So... Why were the Mercs worried about dying from teleporter tumors? Would death from tumors be any different from death by incineration, explosion, gunshot wounds, evaporation, decapitation, fall damage, or any combination of the above?
Or is this just another weird "we have no idea how death is handled in TF2 canon" thing?
I can see terminal illness being permanent in the TF2 lore
It's interesting to note that in 1965, around 3 years before the Gravel Wars that Dell branded his machines to TF Industries and had been employed for quite some time. And then the time between The Gravel Wars and MVM can be roughly 4 years considering that The Gravel Wars started in June of 1968 to end in 1971 around Fall considering if it was near Halloween or October in their time when Gray killed his brothers. Just something to think about when trying to place the short into place.
And, of course, BLU mercs had to make an appearence in the last short...
I feel like we'll never come up with a satisfying theory regarding the numbers and the identities of the mercs.
Only one I can think of is "clones", but that's sorta lame and doesn't explain a lot of things.

Assuming Medic's healing is what lets them cheat death, and assuming Medic's healing is regenerative (Scout's tooth growing back, etc), cancer would be the biggest thing that COULD take them down.
Cancer is just a malignant growth that's deadly because it spreads. Attempting to heal it would just make more cancer, and the mercs already thought they were more tumor than man at that point.

So... What's stopping the Medic from turning them all into Deadpool?
Because Nolan North gets enough work as it is.
Am I the only one who feels like Expiration Date revealed a lot of info about the Mercs?
It seems like their base of operations has always been the redesigned Hydro base in the latest film given all the Marc's personal areas like Medic's lab, Spy's Smoking room etc.
It makes me wonder, I think BLU controls generally everywhere in the Badlands, forcing RED to be in hiding. This makes sense, given BLU owned the town the Pyro burns to the ground, and the Blue team is always attacking ingame. They likely have more men to throw at RED. But RED is definitely more experienced.
Also, am I the only one who wants to see a Meet the Sword Van?
(The van in Expiration Date says Sword on the front.) My theory is S.W.O.R.D. in canon stands for Specialized Weapon Ordnace and Reconnaissance Delivery van. Its definitely the TF2 Merc's answer to the Van from the A-Team.

I think the "Sword Van" was just a little reference to a comic someone made (I can't find the author). But, that would be interesting to see as a basis for a short.
Also, it's very possible that BLU has more control of the Badlands than RED, given how Ms. Pauling is more concerned about RED losing a brief case than BLU losing one. She's supposed to work with both teams, yet in the short she takes more concern in RED and cleans up after them in secret.
I wonder if the directors/writers chose Hydro as the base of operations, because the map is known for not being a map people generally play on, which would be the perfect place for a secret base.

Well, you could assume that all a respawn room does is reproduce someone prior to before they died.
If you run out and get exploded, you get brought back unexploded. If you run out and die of tumors, well though shit, you've still got tumors.

I've always just gone with this theory, makes the most sense to me.
I would pay good money to see the Administrator's reaction to all the mercs downing tools and throwing impromptu dance parties with their enemies.

She'd probably call the Pinkertons :v:

Funny enough, I have a strange medigun called "The Cancer Enhancer."

The fact that they're not sassy enough.
I don't know, Scout's pretty close to the mark.
The fight between the two generations of mercs will be a blast to watch. The TFC mercs behave like a well-oiled war machine in contrast to the TF2 mercs dysfunctional family dynamic. Impersonal, cold, and hard vs. crazy and close-knit.
Something hit my mind. There's another 8 characters we've yet to see show up.
They're all older, i think you know who i'm talking about
Scouts older brothers
You know what would be amazing (but unlikely)?
If the next comic ended on a cliffhanger between the new mercs and the old, and then the next few days, they released the Moonbase update complete with a Mercs vs Mercs SFM.
That'd be awesome. And yes, unlikely, but I can dream.

I'll be disappointed if a TFC mercs vs. TF2 mercs SFM short is released and it DOESN'T involve one of the classic mercs getting wounded and then shouting

Everyone is waiting for that moment. And then when it happens, everyone will scream, love, make gifs, party and theeen finish the comic/short.

Also make sure to show them bunny hopping too.
I want for it to have the RED Medic with a quick fix zooming along behind the Engineer that's Bunny hopping.
And then a confuse frame where we can't see anything due to grenade spam.
And, of course, conc grenade jumps.Conc grenade jumps everywhere.
a small little headcanon someone mentioned on MUS the other day that i found interesting, if not a nice novelty in this whole trend of trying to tie every TF game into one single timeline.
if we were to take the Robotic Bogaloo comic as an alternate storyline, then the alternate future where the "hat wars" take place in "the distant year of 1999" that the Future Engie tried to prevent by traveling back in time could be no other but the original Quake World Team Fortress.

My friend was talking about how the Administrator is so serious usually but seems very enthusiastic and happy during Doomsday.
The answer? Poopy Joe and the Administrator had some history. The death of Poopy Joe made her mad and she put the two teams to fight for eternity. Also explains why she ended her relationship with Saxton.
[sp] spooky joe confirmed for halloween 2027[/sp]
