that was a dick move to anyone who is not a vainilla newcomer.
Can't use mods on valve servers anymore?
Welp, my TF2 playtime is going to plummet to about 0. I've been using reanim/model fix packs for ages now and while they're not essential they've definitely made me enjoy the game a lot more. Now I just won't fucking bother.
Got a link to them?
Welp. If you liked having mods, folks, just take your mods folder, wipe your ass with it, and flush it. Valve made basically the servers completely pure so, yeah, get deleting. Hope you enjoyed them while you had them.
Valve servers are terrible anyway
I haven't played yet, but what in this update had killed mod support?
Other than items_game consistency being forced, which isn't necessary for mods, right?
Got a link to them?
I don't, actually. I've got several from all kinds of places, primarily the TF2 Emporium and Gamebanana. It'd take me forever to round them all up, but suffice to say this has really rogered my rumper. Especially with the sounds. Nothing says "terror" like hitting someone and hearing SKREEEEEEEEBLLLORp because my flesh-hit-sound is custom.

Valve servers used to have sv_pure enabled and at some point it got disabled with replays and now it's been enabled again.

At least hitsounds are still intact. You play this game for so long and having mods helps things feel fresh.
I'm going to bet that this was just a fuckup; they added explosions to the consistency check, so I'm gonna bet someone had a brainfart and enabled pure in the server commandlines thinking it was necessary for the new change.

Bet = pray.

email them about it, and get your friends to email them too
Honestly kind of upset that the Cuban Bristle Crisis fix still isn't. Only a little though.
Neat update.
I'm not even sure how Valve managed to mess up part of the Runner's Warm-Up fix. The two textures for the goggles now have $color2 lines, despite the proxies and so on not being set up for them (which breaks their appearance in HLMV), and they managed to include duplicates of the blue skin and the normal for the rest of the hat, but named to match the goggles texture. Thankfully, they're not used, so the texture isn't broken entirely.
Valve servers are terrible anyway
Sometimes, if not almost every time Valve servers are the only option I have whenever I want to play some good ol' regular TF2, and if my mods are going to make Valve servers unplayable it would be terrible for me and people like me who want to play but cant.
the fact that valve has gone out of the way to prevent the item equip glitch greatly bothers me.
Valve did that in direct response to a report by a user who sent an email in Valve in hopes to receive an unusual hat.
I know this because they added me with the sole intent of telling me so and asked me if they would receive the hat. Of all fucking people to ask, why me?
EDIT: Not sure why you would disagree with this, it isn't a matter of opinion. The user did indeed add me not 24 hours before this and explicitly asked the question after stating that they reported the equip region glitch and how it was done. I'm not inferring anything.
I use a lot of custom weapon skins that, if I believe hard enough, it's something I haven't been using day in and day out for the past 4-5 fucking years. I could sit down for 20 minutes, come up with at least 20-30 different weapon stats, find their appropriate weapons to go with said stats, and test them. Even shit-tastic games like Combat Arms comes out with new weaponry here and there. If TF2 was a man in the desert, and new weapons were water, this shit would be a fucking skeleton mostly buried in a damn sand dune. Oh, and the damn B.A.S.E. jumper doesn't count as a new weapon. It's a gimmick.

TBH they probably did it for more reasons than that. items_game was super manipulatable, enough so to give items unlimited uses and let users give stats to items clientside. They probably waited it off as long as they could, and when that "major exploit" pack was released onto gamebanana it was probably that which warranted officially shutting down the file.
There was someone of facepunch who did the same thing hoping for an unusual. They literally added on "Users could use this to trick new players into thinking a hat is actually a misc, and scam them by selling it for more than it's worth!"
you couldnt dickride any harder for an unusual if you tried

They may have waited it out, they may not have. Valve seems to like to patchwork one thing at a time, to only solve immediate problems. This particular problem of the equip regions was discreetly the modified client file, and nothing that could be fixed by item server serverside checksums, thus what we have now.
Additionally, this user added me with the question approximately 24-36 hours ago, and it could be assumed that the exploit report would have happened within the week of asking me such an unnecessary question, so the likelihood of correlation is high.
They fixed the slowed down animations, at least. Now I can tell whether a door is open or not.
Honestly I'd rather janky anims if it meant I could have fun with my custom content again instead of stepping nude into the tepid pool of grit-water and sewage that is public community servers just so my sounds aren't a mix between a broken telephone and random class voicelines. Anyone else remember when Valve and Source were touted as a new era of modular content? With the amount of restrictions and clampdowns they're putting on non-Workshop custom content with their games it seems like they're trying to stop it over all. The Custom folder shit was just needlessly complicated and convoluted and fucked up like 10 years of modding for utterly no reason, especially the Steampipe HL1 update.
even before this update my custom sound mods had always been getting corrupted after a few weeks, on and off and unfixable by restarting
I'm still convinced pure was just some sort of bug or misunderstanding.
Valve created the custom folder to ease modding. Surely they wouldn't be stupid enough to then ban use of it on their official servers.
I am fucking pissed pure was turned on. I spend a bunch of time finding mods and stuff.
My TF2 was set up exactly how I like it.

Are you serious?
The custom folder is an amazing addition and makes everything incredibly easy.

It wasn't necessary and completely fucked up a good 9-10 years of consistent process. Drag and drop suddenly became superseded and while it might be easier for a newcomer for someone who'd gotten used to the old method it was a pain in the fucking arse. Valve have a rather nasty habit of suddenly changing the methods and means for shit without any warning and ending up inconveniencing the end-user in minor but incredibly aggravating ways, like how TF2 maps compiled by the new Hammer aren't playable in anything other than TF2. It's like getting grains of sand stuck down your top.
Also I don't know how anyone could say the HL1 steampipe update was handled properly, since it broke every single HL1 mod for a good week or so.

They are updating every game to use the new hammer system while keep compatability with the old (like a map made in 2008 could still be usable) and they did fix Half-Life 1. They knew they fucked up and they rectified it. What's the issue?
Also what is wrong with the custom folder thing?
Oh no I have to move my models folder into another folder aaaaahh whatever shall I do
Funfact: The new system fixed a major issue I had. For some reason I could not get custom scripts to work in Half-Life 2 and it's episodes for years. They worked great until the orange box update. Nothing I did could fix it and nobody could help me.
The custom folder system made everything easier to use and more manageable.
Skins interfering with a source mod? Just rename the custom folder.
Installed something and fucked up? Well it's right there in the custom folder and you don't have to wade though the models/textures folders to delete what you installed.
Script broke something? Again, it's right there for easy repair/removal.
You can even organize every skin and mod into their own categories to find them easily

Look at that shit man.
And if you REALLY hate having your skins separated, just make one big ass folder and throw everything in there. It's the exact same experience before steampipe.
You sound like someone who's super stubborn and just refuses to accept change, no matter how many positives there are.
A giant Engie base? Oh shit well the Demo class is full. I hope those 4 Demoknights will do something about those sentries.

A tide of Scouts rushing in? Oh damn, the Engie class is full. I hope those 3 gibus-goggles engineers will defend the intel and not set up in the sniper platform.
TYou sound like someone who's super stubborn and just refuses to accept change, no matter how many positives there are.
One thing I miss about the old way was that you could avoid duplicate file conflicts- they would just overwrite eachother when you copied them. It's not much of a big deal now since you can use alphabetical order to take precedence, but eh.
Anyway, I'm happy valve fixed the animation thing. But they just created a whole new problem altogether with this sv_pure crap. Basically, I have to uninstall all my mods (which are mainly fixes and improvements Valve will never implement) except for my hud and hitsound if I ever want to play a normal game of TF2 without relying on a very small amount of community servers that are only active during certain times and days. Without Valve servers (and shitty ones like LotusClan) my server browser is full of ctf_2forts, trade_minecrafts, and achievement_idles. It's bullshit.
Enforcing explosive consistency shouldn't need sv_pure 1, they were already doing it with disguise smoke and such. items_game.txt crap also shouldn't need sv_pure 1 because it's blocked by the game anyway. I just don't understand. Why is sv_pure needed on pubs at all? Who the fuck wallhacks on pubs? I can only assume Valve did this because of that one idiot that released the mega exploit pack. One guy ruining it for everyone yet again, what a shame.
A giant Engie base? Oh shit well the Demo class is full. I hope those 4 Demoknights will do something about those sentries.
i wonder how long until this turns into xbox tf2 and you have a bunch of engie-only 2fort/dustbowl servers
Wouldn't a class limit mean that there wouldn't be any giant Engie bases
Wouldn't a class limit mean that there wouldn't be any giant Engie bases
Yeah, if the assumption is that class limits will be used up by "The Bads" as some people call them, and all the "good players" (such as yourselves, clearly, you incredibly humble people you) can't play their classes of choice, engie nests aren't going to be an issue, because all the engies will be "filthy Gibus casuals" and whatnot.
Unless you believe that somehow, magically, you'll be stuck with nothing but crappy players while the enemy team's classes are going to be filled with nothing but pro players because they mysteriously don't have "scrubs" on their team somehow, or whatever.
No, the real complaint is this:
"I want to play my favorite class and ONLY my favorite class! I don't care if we have six snipers already and really don't need a seventh one, it's not fair if I can't have my way and play what I want! I'm the only good sniper in the whole world! Why can't I play whichever class I want to at any time regardless of what is good for the team? Why do I have to sometimes play a different class? Why should I have to let other people play MY class sometimes? What am I supposed to do if my favorite class is full? Play medic? TF2 IS RUINED FOREVER! AGAIN!"
