Major Update Speculation XXVI: Much Ado About Nothing
Is there any substantial evidence that Spy vs. Engie even exists?
For all we know it could just have been a scrapped idea left in the file names.
a scrapped idea that is fully implemented in the game's dlls and only requires valve to push a button?
yeah no

And remember the quests leak in EoTL?
And remember the quests leak in EoTL?
Actually i do not. Care to explain?
I find it hard to believe that we will get quality updates any longer. EotL just killed my entire fucking trust in the community and valve. I have zero doubts, invasion will be just another hat fest with none if not any gameplay changes.
Looking forward to spy vs engie update? All it will contain is fuck ton of hats and broken weapons. Looking forward to the matchmaking update? It will fail horribly beacuse of the reasons stated by the community a million times.
TF2 is just going down to a shithole and there is nothing we can do about it except hoping that something good will happen.

Wow, that is a very pessimistic point of view if I ever saw one. If you have just low hopes for TF2 then why do you stick around?

I guess your not wrong for speaking what you think might be the truth. Frankly, you might even be right. I for one am optimistic. Community updates suck but Valve updates tend to be pretty good usually.
You're totally right. TF2 died in 2010, TF2 died in 2011, TF2 died in 2012, TF2 died in 2013, TF2 died in 2014 and TF2 will most definitely die in 2015 too. Rip in pepperonis, sweet prince. We hardly knew ye.

afaik the quest system is to be implemented in spy vs engi
Personally I'd say hype is a good thing, but things turned so sour in EOTL due to the number of things that were not in the update.
As for this Alien themed update, I believe that there is only one real clue. What is the most recent photo of the hat wall we have? Several things catch my eye, such as the old Halloween duck mask and banana.
BTW, how early in the development of MyM2 did Valve supply that photo? Was after most of the artwork was already complete (if so, I'd think this update may not relate to aliens at all).
I just noticed

i have that exact same flamenco hat. nice.
If that photo is up-to-date and the wall is not changed too often; then I am rather interested in that 2nd picture (below army medic cap).
I wonder if someone could go down there and take a better photo for us. Was that Scout always winking?

This makes me wonder how it would look like if Valve had real-life versions of any non-hat cosmetics.
Clothing, such as Mann of the House or Fancy Dress Uniform... or cosmetics like Level Three Chin or A Brush with Death.

Yeah according to McVee one of the weapons from the Love and War update was developed by the EotL team but Valve included it in Love and War instead (my guess it was probably the Back Scatter but I don't know for sure). If Valve hadn't taken one of the weapons for Love and War and included Snowplow as part of the update I think the vast majority of players would of been pretty happy.
Personally all I was expecting was some cosmetics and Snowplow, so getting Snowplow plus a weapon would of been great.

Imagine them selling stuff like the Flapjack or the Chronomancer.

Back to the Void's story:
You could have said in the beginning that nothing was official (like a Night of the Living update)
It was actually Void Skull dropping into MUS and leaving vague as fuck hints while implying there's a big Valve update coming soon, then turning around and having an incredibly thin skin about what happened thanks to him doing that.
When did he ever imply that? Show me the exact post/sentence that made you think there was a complex ARG hidden in the MYM2 pages and that he was foreshadowing a large, official update that was just days away? Maybe he did mishandle the teasing and it unexpectedly spun out of his control as it reached r/tf2, but the vibe I got (and most of us, likely) was that whatever was being teased/hinted at was related to either the comics or something that was still many months away and perhaps just a community project that wasn't declared official yet. And it turns out there was semi-hidden, but rather obvious stuff, the new Valve map on the hat wall, plus Makani's never-before-seen Spy sketch. I really doubt Valve would leave pre-release hyping of a huge, immediate summer update to hints hidden in a series of community interviews that the majority of the TF2 playerbase doesn't even read or is aware of at all (likely, no offense meant).
Here's where I think the cardinal error lies (and a good lesson for the future) - when impatient individuals that are almost imploding with enthusiasm and overzealous hype decide to 'outsurce' the hype to reddit, a much larger part of the TF2 playerbase/community, even though no one in MUS at that point is sure whether the hidden stuff has actually been found/cracked and interpreted correctly/feasibly at all, and state that this is a complex ARG about an incoming update that must be cracked by the combined efforts of the community... hysteria will spread like wildfire, even though it's based on very vague hints that likely aren't even officialy connected to Valve.
I would never make a reddit post like that claiming to be about an ARG 100% connected to an incoming large update and new official content unless MUS (or others, it's not like we're the only ones capable of finding clues; and I sure as hell ain't good at it) found very substantial, obvious hints in a piece of Valve-made, official media (like a TF2 Team blogpost, SFM short, hidden links on the TF webpage, or weird stuff clearly dropping/appearing in-game, like the teleported bread or pre-Pyromania junk drops.
This might come across as me being a bit douchey by publicly pointing fingers, but I feel like Void's catching too much flack for his actions (he didn't even lie to us about stuff being kinda hidden, but obvious - comic sketch, map image; the latter even being a legit, proper hint at a piece of upcoming official content) and that there's a lesson to be learned about the influence and misinformation of grandiose r/tf2 posts and acting too impatiently on supposed vague hints in non-Valve TF2 media.
When did he ever imply that? Show me the exact post/sentence that made you think there was a complex ARG hidden in the MYM2 pages and that he was foreshadowing a large, official update that was just days away?
Yeah I would say making people think that there may be a large update a couple of days away was probably because Wickedplayer and I both posted that for the last 2 years the big TF2 summer update came right before the Steam Summer Sale, which is next week.
Of course neither of us knows for sure it's coming next week (Valve can be unpredictable) but I imagine some people saw that and got to thinking that there may be hints about the possible upcoming update in MyM.
Feels like a lot of the people complaining about how stuff was overhyped in MyM are the ones that were always saying not to get hyped anyway. If this is indeed the case why does it matter to you because you weren't getting hyped anyway so you shouldn't be let down? Like, I don't think I see many people that were actually enjoying themselves saying how bad this has been.
As someone who *was* getting hyped honestly I don't feel that let down. I'll admit a bit of sadness that it wasn't something bigger but on the overall just the confirmation that we're getting a new Valve made made and that that wasn't asteroid in the middle is good enough for me. I mostly just enjoyed the search for clues!
Honestly I'm surprised I'm one of the more optimistic ones in this thread. A year ago when EotL came out I would have thought I'd be in the same mindset as you guys are now. Weirdly, I actually think this year could be great for TF2. The drought is nothing new (even if it does feel a bit worse than usual) and I am a bit annoyed at Valve announcing the taunt workshop then never using it but there's more potential than ever for the game right now!
We have Spy vs Engi coming out probably in a week or two, then at some point we've also got the competitive matchmaking stuff (which for me is going to be huge - I honestly hope it's *part* of Spy vs Engi but I highly doubt it). Then we also now know we've got the Invasion update coming at probably some point this year - in which I'm optimistic that Valve might have learned from their mistakes a little with community updates. This isn't even mentioning the Halloween and Smissmass stuff which will definitely at least be something.
I'm more optimistic about this year for TF2 than I've been in a long time. It makes me real sad to see all you guys so pessimistic but I also completely get why that is - it isn't unfounded. We've been burned before and nobody wants to get burned again.
Personally though, I'm just
What I can perfectly see coming :
TF2 Matchmaking! Beta

I always wanted to send Valve a DIY-Unusual kit. Send them a hat and a box of matches. :v:
Why not send them a cancer tier effect - like a box of purple confetti, or a jar of flies?
What I can perfectly see coming :
TF2 Matchmaking! Beta
Fine by me. I'd rather that honestly because that means the community can tell them if they're completely fucking it up before it's too late.
I know when I did a little Facepunch poll the HIGH majority of people didn't mind whether or not it came out via beta or not.
Didn't void's statement basically mean "No invasion update"?

No it meant no MyM ARG
why was it posted in the major update speculation thread if there was nothing to speculate on
