Major Update Speculation XXVI: Much Ado About Nothing
You're all better dropoing the idea that tf2 needs to be fueled with major content updates every x months to be aluve/to keep you interested.
If tf2 as it is isnt enough for you to keep playing, why stay? Why complain? Why not simply play something else to occupy your time? At this point bugfixes is what we need, no more maps or weapons that no one ever plays/use for the sake of cattering to the tears of a bunch of crybabies.
And what pray tell would scratch the same itch that TF2 does? People don't complain because they grow weary of the game; people complain because they adore it and wish to see it flourish.
It doesn't take six months to test and balance existing weapons, or fix quick-play, and I'm sure Valve holds an exorbitant amount of content under lock and key until the time arrives for some themed extravaganza. This approach is no longer practical with their post-2012 update schedule, and it would be far more sensible to unleash sporadic content on a by-completion basis--in much the same way they handle bug fixing. It may be more judicious to save new game modes and weapons for the aforementioned major themed updates, but lesser affairs (weapon balancing, cosmetics) shouldn't be held hostage in much the same way.

If this thread is to be believed, Overwatch :downs:
I wouldn't mind them basically just dedicating the foreseeable future (year or two) to just wrapping up what they currently have in Beta development (Asteroid, Cactus Canyon, Mannpower, Map Workshop with some love given to servers running them, some sort of official matchmaking) and just focusing on rebalancing or tweaking the dozens of useless and/or problematic weapons and ironing out as much of the bugs and technical issues as possible (glaringly obvious stuff like missing body parts, invisible players, broken Spy disguises, Soda Popper autoreload script advantages, glitched DR ragdolls etc.).
There's enough upcoming confirmed or semi-confirmed content that, if the TF2 Tema follows through on that, it's gonna be enough for the next couple of years, especially if they succeed with matchmaking and giving different types of players different types of servers suitable to their skillsets and mindsets.
Basically, have more updates like the summer 2013 one - sure, they'll get some rebalances wrong, but they might succeed in eventually getting most of them right, if the matchmaking feedback proves positive and they don't shy away at a controversy or two like the SC and Love and War changes. Just be a bit more determined, honest and open to players that it's gonna take a while and multiple tries in some cases to get a reworked weapon right.
I'd really like that, I'd actually sacrifice a Halloween update or a Smissmas update once in a while in favor of housekeeping updates like that. Of course, it would have to involve Valve trying rebalances and bug-fixing overhauls more often and being more communicative and in touch with the playerbase.
This thread is basically a surrogate TF2 General Chat at this point. I'm with the others in that I don't see the harm in letting the thread go dormant until we actually get something to speculate on as opposed to passing the time with filler.
It also annoys me when all i see in this thread is RATE X IF YOU THINK TODAY RATE Y IF YOU THINK NEXT WEEK
I mean, we get it you want to kill time and keep the thread active but after the 20th guessing raffle maybe just let the thread sit for a bit
yes because tons of pages of "ugh it has been X DAYS SINCE LAST UPDATE IN 20XX WE ALREADY GOT Z AND Y" are any different
Whats the soda popper auto reload bug?
We're not talking about 6 months of no major updates, we're talking about 6 months of no actual ingame content. You'd expect at the very least new hats or something to be added at this point.
Like come on, weekly items like H1 of 2012 would be enough to tide us over for a while more.
Tbh I was kinda expecting an update this week but I don't think we'll see anything until July.
I kinda doubt they'd update next week since most pockets will be empty from the sales still...I'm expecting an update on the 30th of June or 2nd of July at the earliest.
and community servers are dying off by the week because no new players even know they exist
that happened about five years ago when they launched quickplay, it's already done, the only actually tf2 survivors of the quickplay holocaust are 24/7 instaspawn 2fort servers, because of course they'd be the only ones to survive.
what really pisses me off is that theres a million billion hale, deathrun, trade, achievment or "i put up some BSP geometry and decorated it with random anime screenshots for some reason" map servers, but wanna play TF2 as TF2 with custom maps? go fuck yourself
quickplay genuinely is the single worst thing to happen to TF2. And don't say "server browsers scare new players", because the overwhelming tide of vsh bullshit servers prove that they are perfectly capable of using it, and the only thing it did was kill the best parts of tf2

but I don't wanna be stuck doing the same robot tour 200 times in a nearly 2 year time lapse again. especially when we pay for each of our games.

It's just as sad knowing there are several really well made community mvm maps they could just as easily ship and throw together some new australiums and killstreak colors and call it a new tour, then for the pub audience toss together a community crate and then ship a few mvm themed weapons a la mecha update did

Yeah it's weird Valve hasn't bought any community MVM maps yet, even if they didn't like the waves that the creator made they could just make their own waves, it would be a lot less work then designing the waves and maps from scratch.
To me it's not even the lack of updates, it's the fact that valve is being completely silent. Do they have 1 person trying to do everything? Is there an entire team small or large currently working on an update? Or maybe they don't even have a single person working on the game. As someone that's been playing since July of 2008 the silence is almost insulting.
[sp]Yes I know this could be considered an overreaction but TF2 has been my favorite game for almost 7 years straight[/sp]
Well, I've been talking with one of the main two developers for an awesome indie game called Overgrowth (he's pretty silent on his blog too, and there have been few updates recently as well), and he says he doesn't like announcing anything until it's completely official and real. Sort of an analogy I guess, Valve might not want to say what they're working on if something might not be added ever. I think, if that were the case, they would need a stern talking to, as radio silence imo is much worse than short-term disappointment
Yes but just saying that they're working on something would be great
So... well... about Valve.
A couple of weeks ago, a little more than a month I guess, a group that organizes an anime convention here in my city announced us to "tune on because we will release more informations about this year's convention soon™".
People waited, and today they said that "because of personal problems of our staff, we won't be releasing any informations about this year's convention yet and we still don't know when it will happen. We're sorry guys."
Then I thought about Valve. They have been really silent about TF2, no sign of life whatsoever, buuut at least they aren't like those guys who created hype for something they didn't even know if they could make possible yet. So yeah, it could be worse, see?
Valve has said they're working on stuff. Give them time.
Valve has said they're working on stuff. Give them time.
Yeah they are always working on stuff. We actually know a lot more of what they are working on right now then we usually do. As I posted a few pages ago:
Spy vs Engie (probably new weapons for both classes)
Competitive Matchmaking
Mannpower moving out of beta
Final versions of Cactus Canyon and Asteroid
New Valve made map shown in Meet Your Makers
PL_Borneo most likely going official
Of course it's possible we wont get all of that in the next major update but we will probably get at least some of it.
The scariest thing to me is that I want a bunch of cosmetics to have strangifiers but maybe they never will???
Or maybe ill be at the tender age of 97 when they make Lumbricus Lid strangifiers
I want a strangifier for the Black Rose
I want a strangifier for the Black Rose
Here's a simpler one, complete the Strange weapons.
Valve has said they're working on stuff. Give them time.
To be fair, we've given them six months.
To be fair, we've given them six months.
And not once in that time did they update the panic attack (or any of the Christmas update weapons) to make it not the worst non melee in the game.

Typically Valve only releases weapon re-balances during major updates, probably because they know more customers read the patch notes and it means more people will know about the rebalance then during a normal update.
Thatd be true, but months after the vacc was reworked people still was unaware that the resistances were now switched withthe reload button, not with M3.

Oh really? Whoops, I guess the vaccinator isn't useless anymore.

it was never useless
it wasn't never useless
Fixed
Fixed
It can combat Lmaobox snipers if you are using bullet resistance.
If a hacker is giving you trouble just go sniper or have someone go sniper with Darwin's Danger Shield.
Then heal the sniper with bullet resistance Vaccinator and the hacker can't kill you or the sniper.
