It is irrelevant. What is relevant is that once you've been countered by the other class, you can change your loadout when respawning and continue on playing the same class, instead of changing class or having to rely on your teammates to help you.
I'm not sure how any weapons allow classes to straight up fulfill another class's role, or defeat a counter that used to work.
Aside from this, due to the extreme amount of unique weapons, you can not often know exactly what to expect from another class anymore. It's a chaotic snake-pit of different classes equipped with random weapons.
Not really. Most of the weapons do about the same sorts of things, but slightly different. All sniper unlocks allow him to take out enemies from a distance, or help him deal a bit of close range work to protect himself. Nothing game changing. Pyro unlocks are all designed for ambushing tactics, and close to mid range combat. None of them really do much different. Soldier: Rocket spamming, juggling. The melee weapons offer some interesting ideas for him, but don't revolutionize him. The Pain Train sort of does this, but honestly it isn't widely used enough for that to matter, and isn't a major game changer. Demoman: Alright, I admit that the Chargin Targe changes it, as does the loch n load. The Demoman is the most changed by any updates. He's definitely different at demo knight, as is his differences with the loch n load. Scout: Mobility, single enemy take downs. That's what the scout has always been about, and still is. Engineer: Defensive, or maybe the battle engy. Stays the same. The gunslinger is not great, but doesn't change it dramatically, and none of his weapons change the way the class is played dramatically. Spy: The Spy is and always will be a master of mind games. His updates have never changed that. The Kunai allows him to last longer and survive more, to weave in and out of combat taking down enemies. That's all his weapons really do. Add neat tricks to his arsenal. Medic: Nope. The Crossbow adds some interesting tricks, but nothing major, and the various melee weapons just add a few different abilities to him. His healing doesn't change much. Heavy: Soaking up tons of damage and dishing it out as well. His weapons don't change his playstyle, although punching people can become more prevalent.

I am going to go watch The Office now.
Simski appears to have some immatured behavior in this thread. He loved TF2 during release, hates it now and to compensate he whines about it on Facepunch? How about shake your fist at Valve and move on? Like, y'know all the fancy grown-ups (that you so much want to be like) do? I don't care much about hats but I like the hatless and the Demoknight. Unlocks bring new challenges to counter and keeps the game fresh. My opinion, my truth. Kthxbai.
He thinks that all the new weapons and hats and unusual effects and paints make the game hectic and chaotic and confusing to play. I can see that. Personally, I think that TF2 is never going to have that feel it used to, but it's still better than alot of FPS games that are popular these days. That's why I still play it.

Almost reminds me of Team Fortress Classic which was the mother of all multiplayer explosive spam games ever. Dustbowl in TFC still makes me shudder. Now with the item servers down and everyone going vanilla it's a lot more quiet, heavymedics are pretty much unstoppable and engies are never offensive. It's fun in a way, but the current "real" TF2 has a completely different form of fun. It's quick reaction in the following way: Oh fuck a heavymedic. Let me just run around and lob a few shots in the Medic and leave the Heavy for others to pick. While in Vanilla Fortress 2 it's more like OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK A HEAVYMEDIC RUN EVERYONE IT'S COMING TOWARDS US GET INTO POSITIONS
Dustbowl in TFC still makes me shudder.
TFC Dustbowl, Stage 3, Capture Point 1 was spamcentral. There was only one door Blue team could get out of.
No, that's what it was. In vanilla Fortress you probably had to light him for quite a while. [editline]22nd April 2011[/editline]
TFC Dustbowl, Stage 3, Capture Point 1 was spamcentral. The horror.
I miss Heavies being (somewhat of) the worst class in the game. He was devastating up close (like he was designed), but he required skill and a good Medic / team to stay alive. After the spinup / speed buffs, get a series of heavy-medics on a team and you're damn near guaranteed to win.

Also, the buffs ruined the heavy's class role. You had to plan ahead of time and be one step ahead of enemies to be the winner of a fight, but now it's easier to play the heavy as a slow pyro with high health.

To be honest, hats were funny at first but now it's getting out of hand.
I think that TF2 is never going to have that feel it used to
How so?
get a series of heavy-medics on a team and you're damn near guaranteed to win.
That's really just because it's one of the easiest ways to have constant teamwork; a medic pocketing a target. In this game, a two person teamplay is always going to be able to beat two people not actively working together at minimum.
You don't even need the medics any more since the heavy update and the sandwich.
The ability to pull a medium healthkit when spun down or refill health if you taunt are no substitute for being able to be at 150% health with constant health regeneration even while spun up. It might be easier than before to play him as a slow pyro, his main role is still as the heavy.
To be honest, hats were funny at first but now it's getting out of hand.
D'you mean in terms of garishness? I don't know, but I don't seem to ever see the more obnoxious hats in the servers I play on, so that's not really a problem for me.

Instead of putting out a large quantity of unpolished garbage and unfitting cosmetic items. I was all excited for TF2 until after the Polycount packs. Then I just felt that Valve didn't care at all anymore about any harmony in TF2, they didn't care about maintaining the TF2 theme, or the old ideals of easily distinguishable threats, or even the promise that cosmetic items would not effect gameplay. As if this wasn't enough, their crates and keys is an insanely disappointing low-blow; although not related to gameplay it is still one of those things that I never expected a company like Valve to do.

[editline]23rd April 2011[/editline] really though simski tells it like it is I want Valve to include a hat list, where there's a big list of all the hats and you can disable them, or replace them with a model file. Same should be done for weapons
Even better, Valve should give TF2 a server command that makes everything vanilla. So if people hate hats and all they can just play on vanilla servers. Boom, whining and problem solved. No trading, no hats, no "shitty artstyleraping items" or anything. And those who like trading and all that can stay on other servers.
Boom, whining and problem solved. No trading, no hats, no "shitty artstyleraping items" or anything. And those who like trading and all that can stay on other servers.
No, people will be whining that there are not much/too much servers with/without vanilla on.
No, people will be whining that there are not much/too much servers with/without vanilla on.
Of course they'll whine, but that's their own problem. It's not up to Valve for how many Vanilla or UnVanilla servers the community makes.
Valve purposefully changed TF2's art style to accommodate the community's plea for customization
I lost my Yellow Belt.
Valve purposefully changed TF2's art style to accommodate the community's plea for customization
...That doesn't work. At all. If anything, the new items would've changed the art style. The art style isn't some written thing, it's the actual model and texture direction of the freaking game.
Hey hey, where did my Tyrants Helm go? I am most displeased.
