It has been stated that being able to self-differentiate took precedence over the artstyle to a certain extent in terms of paints. I forget exactly when it was stated, but it was when a staff member was asked about their decision to use paints far from the original palette.
they could have kept it all within the class roles
I still disagree that such a thing has occurred to a significant extent, but I can respect your point of view.
There's a more than likely chance that Valve doing this might spark a fad in the development community. Do you REALLY want $5 cosmetic items in every game?
$5 cosmetic items that also unlock for free at random intervals or by completing challenges? Fine with me.
The only opposition I have to the current state of TF2 is that the pyro doesn't need to have almost instant kills that are easy to pull off. The Axetinguisher and now The Flaregun can both almost one shot nearly every class with ease. Even worse now, thanks to the Degreaser. My only problem.

It's better suited to getting someone to run or to distract a class, for example when I shoot a sniper and he has to go run to heal it gives my team time to move forward without being sniped.
