There's also the comical "Vintage Vinatge" factor that the non-v version lacks. Non-V Merry is 2 refined max in my opinion.

The v. one is extreamly rare

Also anyone with the taste to enjoy such a fine hat as the V. Merryweather is far too rich to associate with the poor and irish by wearing a non-vintage hat.
