Posterize makes it look a lot more choppy. I'm guessing he saves for web using 4 colors, then edits the colors after.

No. Also, most likely your decals aren't wiped and just invisible. It has happened to me before, but basically if you can click on your sign and the "Restore" button is clickable, then it's not gone and other people can still see your decal. The invisibility to yourself will fix itself.
This invisible decal thingy happened to me like 5 times now, I wonder what causes it.
