We know nothing about the pyro, and that's just exactly how I'd like to keep it.
Now I like to imagine that the pyro is a mysterious badass.
Portraying her as a girl would ruin that look, and make the pyro look like the cliché hot girl rebelling against men not taking girls seriously in war. Even if that's not what Valve might imply, it IS what the fandom will Imply the second the pyro is revealed to be a girl.
After that, the horny teenagers of team fortress 2 are going to be flocking around the pyro, making lame anime fanfictions, drawing lame anime fanwork, drawing a lot more female pyro porn than there is today, drawing thousands of lame cliché badass girl stories about the pyro.
Frankly, making the pyro a girl would have the same impact on me as if Valve would have suddenly changed their character artist to the guy who makes the nerfnow comics.
The pyro would just be a cliché, made to please horny teenagers.
It would ruin everything I loved about the pyro, as a mysterious perhaps shy badass.

Valve obviously want to make their characters fit into certain stereotypes, and to be exagerated versions of real life.
I do believe that if Valve actually wanted the pyro to be a woman, they would have made it more clear with his silhouette and appearance.
The pyro does not fit into any stereotype, he is a walking enigma.
If he was female, it would show more on his silhouette and appearance, and his voice actor wouldn't be male.

There's a series of sketches in Little Britain about two cross-dressing men. They've both got manly habits ("I want a dress with tassles, and frills, and... shit.") and almost nobody mistakes them for girls (the moustache doesn't help).
