This is the hat sitting on the ground. The collision for when it rolls around is wonky - it acts like it's on top of a giant invisible ball. I dunno anything about collision modeling, can anyone point me in the right direction?
That happens with plenty of models.

3DS Max is fairly complicated, but I'd say you're right, most tutorials will be for it. Max comes with a bunch of tutorials built in (at least the full version does, i dunno about the trial) so that should get you started. It's not so much about what program you use, it's more about concepts and such when it comes to 3D modeling.

Your reference mesh IS a phymodel ;)
If your hats a bit more complex, you might need to make a simplified phymodel for efficiency though.

The scout and the engy share the worldmodel for the pistol, meaning that scouts would have it, or other engies wouldnt.
