Looks cool, man, glad you got it working
On another note, since i've never used 3ds max before, i don't know how to apply textures. I got the texture in the Material editor Window, but it work let me drag it onto the model. I have no idea what i'm doing wrong. Anybody have any advice?
I figured out what I did wrong when I compiled it! The only problem now is that the texture wont show. Also, here's a preview of it:
Three things that could cause that:
1) The texture wasn't applied to the model before exporting.
2) The texture wasn't in the correct folder when exporting and was moved afterwards.
3) The file path in the vmt doesn't correctly lead to the vtf.
Regarding the Firespitter, can someone replace the the flamethrower's model with the backburner's? Just a simple model swap? Until the Firespitter is released.

The Backburner is simply the snake/shark head on the end, other than that the exact flamethrower.
Ie, the only 'Backburner model' is the new extra bit on the end.
Sorry, but that's it. Perhaps someone could remodel the flamethrower to include the Backburner head in itself, but if it isn't exactly positioned the normal Backburner head will go apeflip.

Suttles'll take you up on that.
Suttles home grows 'em.
No, he harvests them.
Suttles seems to have become famous for his ever increasing numbers of balls..
Perhaps he should donate them to charity?
Famous balls for sale? I'd pay millions.

you know this raises a question...
if suttles has so many...how many does a manly man such as saxton hale have? o-O
Oh good god.
Billions.
He keeps them all in cold storage.
Enough that if he has one more, his pants will explode.

That's what I meant, the head on the regular flamethrower. I could have sworn this was already done. Either way, it doesn't matter.

Right now we're unsure if "Firespitter" is its final name. We also wanted this to be its own original flamethrower, not a replacement. We've been juggling around a few abilities it should use, but it's really up to Valve anyways on what abilities it should have. We originally wanted the idea that the Firespitter ignites projectiles with its airblast and the splash damage from the projectile will ignite nearby enemies.
Your suggestions for a new name or abilities are welcome. :)
I'll die for the right to name this The Wrath of Wan Hu.
Can I see a pic of it in blu?

It's only blood that looks awful, the rest is good.
I'm sure you can find some tutorials for blood textures.

That's just the concept. We're still working on the model. We ran into some size issues (the originally concepted head was slightly bigger than the propane tank), but it should be done today or tomorrow.
o_o
but it looks so 3D

Blood NEVER turns out good.
It's always wrong in some way or another.
So I recommend trying to do rusty nails
I'll leave it for now, might submit it to valve as a concept they can look into though.
I don't understand how to add bones and can't find a tutorial for 3ds max
i need a bone to be bip_head, but done know where to put it, and the hat i'm modifying doesn't have a bone, or not one i can find

Import the player model with bones intact for the class the hat is for. Delete the player model and all bones except bip_head. Add a skin modifier, add bone using said modifier, add texture to said bone, voila.

Hmm...
Well I'm thinking that it should be a weapon suited for defense. Sure the current Flamethrower is perfect for both defense AND offense, but I think it should be more specialized, because I love being defensive Pyro.
First of all, the flamethrower has the properties of a blow torch. It will have a clean, blue flame and it will have little damage fall off, but more or less the same reach as before. Also, it no longer has a lag delay. It will be in a perfectly straight line and you will not need to "lead" it. The contact damage will be halved, so it should have a base of 3.4 damage, but it will not ramp up much and it will not ramp down much. Damage will be mostly uniform throughout the whole flame. Afterburn will not last as long, either. (I'm not sure about this.)
Now for the fun part: The flame will emit a force, like a blowing fan. (Not the Force of Nature, but as if they were in a wind tunnel. (Well, I guess like the FaN...)) If someone were to run into the flame, they would be slowed down or stopped, or maybe even pushed away. (I'm not sure which is the most balanced.)If they ran against it, they would be pushed away faster than usual. This also applies to ubered players. This would discourage players from entering the area the Pyro is defending, and it would also discourage the Pyro from chasing, as chasing the player would result in the player being pushed out of range. The closer you are to the origin of the flame, the more force it does. At the tip it would be a slight force, towards the middle would be a full stop, and point blank would actually push people back.
It will have something similar to the airblast: It will release a short range fire puff that will completely destroy projectiles like rockets, grenades, or stickies. (Not sure about the Stickies.) It will do minimal damage to players, and it will take 50 ammo per blast.
That is my idea for a defensive flamethrower.
Good idea?
