Also while you are taunting your usually screaming out some voice lines and any person who plays TF2 for a while will be able to know you are taunting and/or find you.
Bonk argument also doesn't mean anything since you cant shoot, even though yes you can use it to your advantage to locate enemy players and sentries (and a lot of people do that) You still wont be able to attack. Third person activated with the advantage of being able to shoot would effectively be like an wallhack.
I'm getting at the fact that people keep moaning about never seeing their hats/medals.
Majority of people are more concern about owning the hats than seeing something they already know what it looks like on a character.
And how about you taunt to see your hat/medal instead? Hats arent game breaking either, not seeing them aint gonna break the game.
OP, let me explain to you why the instances in which thirdperson mode is currently used are fine, but having it on constantly isn't
taunts: they remove the control for a few seconds and allow you to enjoy the taunt
humiliation: the game is basically over and it allows you to see the special animations
stun: again, it removes the control from you, you can't use it to your advantage
bonk: it's supposed to give you a tactical advantage, you don't need firstperson view because you can't shoot, thirdperson mode gives you bigger situational awareness.
Having it on all the time would mess up your aim (the camera rotates around a point in front of the screen instead of rotating around its own centre), you could see around corners and the people behind you. It's a very bad idea gameplay-wise.
IF you want third person play Battlefield Heroes.
actually using the sourcemod exploit i went around with thirdperson on and i can say that it IS rightfully labeled as a cheat and will remain so
to many times did i dodge a back stab and see exactly where a sentry was without even peeking my head out
although it was really hard to aim...
Having third person all the time is quite different from having third person when you taunt.
When you taunt, you may be able to see around corners... however during the entire time of your taunt you are immobile and unable to defend yourself.
If you had third person all the time, you would have the ability to see around you while being mobile, spies would have no chance because you can see behind yourself AND you have the mobility to turn around before they can stab you.
As fun as it might be, I wouldn't want this for anything but maybe idle servers or other very non-serious servers.
These servers could ofcourse just install a plug-in for that anyway.
I'm not spamming. You've been told why it's a bad idea.

Not really. You can't track or shoot anything that isn't in your line of sight.
Wallhacks let you see everyone, everywhere, at once. I don't think any of you are even listening.
And how about you taunt to see your hat/medal instead? Hats arent game breaking either, not seeing them aint gonna break the game.
You see your hats once in a blue moon. It would be better to see it constantly, if you elect to be in third person.
I like the idea of over the shoulder. Why does everyone completely disregard that too?
Majority of people are more concern about owning the hats than seeing something they already know what it looks like on a character.
By this logic, I'll need to visit any other country in person if I merely look at a picture of it.
We shouldn't try to go to the moon. We can see if from our house, which is clearly enough for anyone.

You don't have a point. I don't think you even tried to challenge my idea, apart from telling me it's "shitty" without putting up an intellectual challenge.
taunts: they remove the control for a few seconds and allow you to enjoy the taunt
I already pointed out one situation where there's considerably less danger involved, giving you a chance to take advantage of it. Not to mention I already said that over-the-shoulder is, I admit, a better plan.
humiliation: the game is basically over and it allows you to see the special animations
Like I said, a crafty person could still avoid being shot by taking advantage of the third person camera. Nobody complains about this or even admits it could be a problem, denying them their cheap dominations.
stun: again, it removes the control from you, you can't use it to your advantage
The current stun mechanics are incredibly stupid and all-around nearly useless.
bonk: it's supposed to give you a tactical advantage, you don't need firstperson view because you can't shoot, thirdperson mode gives you bigger situational awareness.
This more or less supports my point. People moan about third person giving a tactical advantage and better situational awareness, but they don't complain about those Bonk! attributes. It's true you can't shoot, but a lot of the time shooting is pointless if you're running from someone bigger than you anyway.
Having it on all the time would mess up your aim (the camera rotates around a point in front of the screen instead of rotating around its own centre), you could see around corners and the people behind you. It's a very bad idea gameplay-wise.
I'm still unconvinced.

If you even bothered to read my thread, you would know that I already said that a third person mode should be CLOSER to the player than the cheat mode.
I'm getting tired of repeating myself.
When you taunt, you may be able to see around corners... however during the entire time of your taunt you are immobile and unable to defend yourself.
Already covered. Again, I'm just repeating myself now.
If you had third person all the time, you would have the ability to see around you while being mobile, spies would have no chance because you can see behind yourself AND you have the mobility to turn around before they can stab you.
We already went over this.
The proposed changes involve the camera being closer to the player. If you see a spy behind you at that distance, they're already close enough to kill you and you'd probably die in a normal match anyway.
By this logic, you should be sick of looking at duplicates of the same 9 characters in two color shades constantly killing each other for hours on end. Somehow, though, we enjoy playing this game for hours on end. Are you telling me I'll get bored of seeing a small group of pixels on my character's head?
Might as well shun RPGs based on seeing the same character through the entire story.

This is what you get for being a moron in my thread.
I meant bonk is fine BECAUSE IT'S SUPPOSED TO give you a tactical advantage, and the advantage isn't even big because you can't shoot.
Having that advantage all the time, while you're able to shoot, WITHOUT needing to use specialised unlocks for it would be a bad idea.
Since the class updates are built around being able to multi-task (or at least change an otherwise stiff playstyle), allowing other classes a slight advantage over sentry evasion via peeking around a corner is more or less still fitting with Valve's style.
Regarding Bonk.
It doesn't effect gameplay that you have third person while using bonk.
Because not only are you not able to attack, you couldn't be backstabbed either way. Not to mention how it's whole usage is based around avoiding sentries, so it is not an unfair advantage that it does help him with that slightly.
Are you just ignoring what I've been telling you?

You keep talking about my idea like you didn't even read anything I said in reply to your last post.
Edit: Wait, I just realized I was editing old posts that nobody is probably reading.
I wouldn't mind if there was a button you could press so you could see your character in third person... but the button only works while you're inside the spawn area. It could use the "inspect player" button, and have it inspect yourself whenever you aren't targeting another player.
Then you can admire yourself, and you aren't breaking gameplay since it isn't used anywhere which would benefit you other than for looking at yourself.
Look, just seriously consider all the replies you've gotten for a moment.. I appreciate your opinion, but you aren't the only one repeating yourself. Third person is cool, yes, but seeing around corners is *not* okay. The over the shoulder view is better, but you can still see where you aren't supposed to. I'm not particularly opposed to the idea itself, but optional view changes are not a good idea in a multiplayer game such as TF2. As I stated earlier, some people will want to use it and some won't, but anybody who wants the very much relevant tactical advantages 3rd person offers will be forced to use it. As any good game designer knows, you should never force somebody to do something they do not want to just to keep up.

You're not going to win them over by telling them that they're stupid or that they don't understand because they aren't reading every post you've made in this entire thread.

Maybe because your argument doesn't hold up in their minds. Find a knew counter-argument.
DISCLAIMER: I misunderstood the OP and am currently trying to defend a server-side option that would enable thirdperson on every player
Why are you people endlessly shooting this down?
It's not a horrible idea if it had some fine-tuning, and you wouldn't be forced to play it. If there was a specific server config and servers that clearly advertised that they had 3rd person enabled, not only would you not have to play it, but you could blacklist the servers and stop complaining.
All this person is suggesting is adding a new way to enjoy the game we play, and with adjustments, it would probably be pretty fun.
Chill the fuck out

Agreed. But also he's not accepting the fact that this should never, ever be a universally available setting.
Agreed. But also he's not accepting the fact that this should never, ever be a universally available setting.
Why? It wouldn't ruin the entire god damned game for everyone who ever bought or played it if it was implemented as a serverside toggleable cvar

This could be a good Idea, except it would divide the community up into First Person players and Third Person players. And if it splits them right down the middle, each group has half as many severs to choose from.
