I've wanted to get into competitive but I swear my skill level is just too shitty.
At best I can stomp pubs but hell anyone can do that, meanwhile if you put me up against anyone more skilled then that then I get fucked over entirely.
I've tried MGE but I swear besides getting killed repeatedly by guys with lime/ pink unusuals it does nothing to improve my skills.
They say iron is pretty much glorified pubs, I got no experience with that though.

I can't vouch for Iron, but back when I played Steel (Seasons 6-8) that's pretty much how it worked.
There was no coordination, you basically played how you wanted as your class. Hell, most of the first season I didn't play the class I join for (Sniper), I was forced to play Heavy because some other guy on the team would always pick him before I got on the server.

That sounds like a case of a disorganized team though
No. That's how every steel team was. You just play how you want, maybe there's a little coordination but usually it's literally just a pub with weapon bans.
Most people get into comp by joining/making a Iron/Steel team together with friends and eventually get better at the game to continue into silver and so on.
Get your tf2 buddies together and try out iron or steel. Comp TF2 is really fun with friends and very rewarding if you're any good but that doesn't matter as much
No. That's how every steel team was. You just play how you want, maybe there's a little coordination but usually it's literally just a pub with weapon bans.
Again, it just means you joined a team with no clear roster or terms of communication. You can say every steel team is like that and be true, but that wouldnt prevent you from finding a team with good communication

Then find a team.
Then find a team.
I have, i fail to see how that's relevant to your issue though
I have, i fail to see how that's relevant to your issue though
I don't have an issue, you just seem dead-set to prove me wrong that steel teams aren't usually unorganized for some stupid reason.
If your team is organized, congratulations! Good for you! Experience says that chances are they won't, not that that's a problem. I was just stating my past experience and how chances are that still applies.

Again, i'm not disagreeing with your point that they are disorganized, i'm telling you disorganization isn't a mandatory rule of being in steel, that's just disorganized teams going for steel, so if you end up on one that sounds like a result of your teams poor communication, not "oh it's steel so naturally we have to be disorganized"
You are basically telling me that MvM official mode is much like Left 4 Dead multiuplayer (you make one mistake of any kind and are labelled as trash and you are voted to be kicked out)?

We won that round, it was a miracle. They probably body-shot people to death.

I got kicked as soon as I joined a L4D2 match because I missed my one spitter attack, so they told me I was horrible and immediately voted me off.

It's hoodoo. Most of the time blue doesn't even get past cap point 2
Never actually being able to play Mann vs Machine.
Just because I have only completed 1 tour they all assume I'm crap and ask me to leave/votekick before the rounds even started. I don't spend points straight away as I wait if someone requests I change class (else I default as pyro or soldier).
Just because I have better things to spend money on compared to the guy with 170 tours..
Douchebags honestly.

if you don't know the rolls of any of the other classes then you shouldn't be manning up anyway
games don't normally involve anybody "changing" so you're kind of not buying upgrades and being less efficient for no reason

Class roles in MvM usually work on a "first come, first serve" mentality. You pick your class, assign the points and then wait for others. If someone did want you to switch classes(with good reasons), you are able to refund your upgrades if it's the setup for the first wave. Otherwise, fuck them. If they do start a vote to kick you out which then passes, that's unfortunate. Hopefully you'll have better luck next time around.
MvM players don't really like anyone who's passive and doesn't listen much or at all. Especially if they're a low tour. As long as you're open to advice and all that jazz, you should be fine. And unless you're not playing with a group of friends, you can't really break the meta without someone going ballistic over it. And to be frank, Pyro just gets destroyed during early waves so it isn't viable at all to play as him during them.
Ask around for help if you are unsure as to how you are supposed to approach the mission. Usually the more experienced players will give help to the best of their abilities. Unless they're just some sour "profiteer" who wants their tour to be done with as quickly as possible for the loot.
Not sure why the dumbs. If there's a spare slot for soldier I will choose soldier. If there's also a slot of medic being free and the team are all asking for a medic, then it's a switch for medic.
Just done a full set of rounds as heavy and we never required a round restart. A decent game, then for the final round all switched to pyro as a laugh and finished it.
We all offered advice to each other and there we go,
I also have 804 hours on TF2 and have the gold ownership medal as I've owned it since Orange Box was fairly new.. I'm hardly a F2P'er.

Believe me when I say that if you know the basic mechanics of the game, you're ready for competitive TF2. There's a lot of different resources for getting started; the best of which is probably http://playcomp.tf/ (seriously, check it out!)
The main obstacle that people usually struggle with is getting through the tough initial leap from casual public play to serious competitive play. Many promising teams start in Iron/Steel and don't progress further than that either due to lack of motivation or issues with teammates. Generally if you're truly interested in getting into competitive you're going to want to find some friends to do that with, and hopefully stick with them throughout the ranks you progress through. Case in point, I formed a UGC Steel team a couple of seasons ago and have recently made it up into the paid and "prestigious" ESEA Open.
I think the best thing to remember is not to get discouraged and as cheesy as it sounds, follow your dreams. Competitive TF2 truly is a lot of fun and I honestly think the biggest reason naysayers claim it's "dying" isn't because Valve doesn't support it, it's because the community is becoming more tight-knit.
tl;dr if you're interested, there's a lot of resources out there, it's more fun with friends
also on a relevant note, if you're still doubtful about how skilled you need to be to play: a couple of seasons ago there was an Iron 6v6 team made up entirely of bots - they won their first match of the season before getting removed by admins

I think that this post here kinda summarizes what the post just above you was stressing. You're getting worked up over things you shouldn't (dumb ratings and teams kicking you are one in the same, they're going to happen some days), and you're not absorbing advice as much as spitting back your anecdotes like your hours in TF2 or your ownership medal. Those both mean nothing honestly. Knowing how a class works mechanically is an advantage, definitely, but MvM is not TF2 in a sense past your class' weapons and the things that come with that. You'll be looking for much different things as each class than you normally would (ex: Scout runs around, collects money as their primary job, mad milks mob waves and fan o' wars big bots or sentry busters to help their engie friend).
Really not trying to rain on your parade, as I hope you improve and I've been there too, having only 3 tours under my belt actually as of writing. Just understand that sometimes you can't win with people who'll just kick you on principle of being low tour number. Shit happens in every game, don't let it get you down and have fun.
People can be really cocky in public MVM in my experience, that's probably just because I haven't sunk $200 into it. They'll boss you around and tell you that you're a shit player or you picked a shit class (you're a shit medic*, heavy is useless, etc) and they'll try to get you to leave or change. I did meet nice people in public MVM before, but almost every match has those one or two guys. I definitely prefer it with friends, but good luck finding 6 people that still play this :v:
* I was a shit medic because I didn't have some shield thing they all wanted (I didn't know how to activate it and I couldn't find it in the key bindings). I didn't even want to be medic, just nobody else wanted to before that, so I was shoehorned into it and then blamed when it didn't work.

Welcome to co-op, where it's less "do what you want" and more "do what the team needs". If you really want to play MvM then it's a wise idea to have at least a basic idea of how to play most if not all of the classes on a basic level at least and there are plenty of guides out there that tell you how. I personally hate how people sperg out about the meta at times but it's still a great starting point for people starting out.

Natasha Heavy has gotten me through nearly all my MVM games, and once they let me take up Heavy (replacing Brass Beast Heavy) we had almost no problems burning through the robots. I'm nearly always Heavy, the only exceptions are a couple games where I played as Soldier or Scout (aka money collector), which I was okay with although Tanks were a thing I simply could not make a dent in which was bad for when other people weren't dealing with them. I know the people I'm talking about aren't flattered by my words, but they can get over themselves. If it bothers them so much, they should get a team of friends together instead of rolling around insulting public players for not being MLG enough.

The Projectile Shield was added in 2013 during the Two Cities update.
It pretty much overhauled the Medic's role in MVM as it blocks all incoming projectiles and bullets while damaging robots on contact.
By default it's bound to mouse3.
I would recommend starting a private server and playing around with all the upgrades as the gamemode has changed significantly since launch.
it may make sense to not play the classes in mvm that you dont know so well
in the end it'll only cause complications on who goes what class
i didn't touch medic for the first 10 tours i did
2 tours later my main mvm class became medic
speaking of medic in mvm
fuck giant crit pyros and their + 33% invisible fire range that goes through the shield
explosion, yep
bullets, uh-huh
robots, yus
flames?
fuck no! you think we know how to program that shit!?!
That's the thing, I didn't want medic, I was forced into it, then blamed when it didn't work. How about instead someone who knows medic takes him from the start? Then you don't have to blame the guy who said he never played medic in MVM.
again, if you aren't prepared to be any one of the classes for MvM and support the team then you shouldn't be manning up to begin with
