TBH holding up a shield works in Overwatch because all maps are choke fests, you get ult charge from hitting people and no one is mobile or strong enough to get behind and wipe the floor with your Reinhardt or Orisa. The mere existences of Soldier, Demoman and Scout make holding up a shield as a slow and team-reliant class literally suicide. And you are getting rid of Heavy's primary damage output for that, unlike the Gunboats which get rid of your secondary and Bootlegger which lets you keep your Stickybomb Launcher. IMO it's a bad idea to give Heavy a shield but I wouldn't mind seeing how it goes.
The Escape Plan is way too risky seeing how it puts a giant skull over your head saying "Hey, shoot me!"
You know not. Weapon and balance analysis incoming.
I am actually of the opinion that the Escape Plan should be nerfed in some way. Because as it stands, the only real downside is taking minicrits while active, and for like a second afterwards. This downside is extremely negligible, considering the weapon's contextual use and function.
In TF2, mobility is almost ALWAYS given in exchange for power or health. If a Demo or Soldier want to explosive jump, they must give up health. If they want to jump without using health (Jumper weapons), they must give up their main weapons, their power.
And then there is the Escape Plan. A weapon that adheres to this rule, but due to the context it is used in as aforementioned, ought not to. And that is because in ANY situation where you are inclined to whip out your Escape Plan and run away, you will already be on dangerously low health to begin with, thus making the downside of taking minicrits practically nonexistent. If I were knocked down to say, 60 or less health, I can either stay and fight on low health, or I can run away to a health pack at a speed only a Scout can contest, and live to fight another day. Hell, sometimes Soldiers even just barbarian charge you at Scout-speed with the Escape Plan and melee kill you, since the thing doesn't even have a damage penalty or no random crits, despite the insane utility it presents.
What if heavy got a new minigun that has a secondary ability of generating an energy shield? I dunno what the stats would be on this thing, but I feel this at least makes more sense than axing his primary weapon entirely.
I have yet to see an escape plan holding soldier actually escape, even in competitive settings. *Shrug*
They usually just get mowed down the instant they take it out. It's why I use the market gardener and the disciplinary action the most.
i've said this before but what about a big ramboesque hipfire machine gun for heavy that doesn't have revving mechanics but needs reloading?, i've done some more thinking on the stats of this thing but it's still not complete;
it'd probably maybe hold 150 bullets in the mag, would have a long reload time + slow you down to stock revved speed as you reload so you'd need to go to a safe spot as you reload.
it having less bullets in mag would maybe reward good tracking since you can't just spray those 150 bullets down and hope it hits. ( also maybe this thing would have a bit of extra accuracy since it rewards pure tracking? )
this whole idea may be stupid but I'd just really enjoy something similar to this, maybe the stats I suggest won't work but there has to be a way to make this concept work, I'd really like to see some ideas from you all.
How about dual Uzis or some other smg for Heavy? Gives Heavy a speed boost, left and right mouse buttons fire each smg.
edit: could have low reserve ammo to incentivize using a shotgun while you look for ammo packs.

We're playing two different games then.

You're giving a class that is supposed to be slow in movement more movement speed. That completely negates Heavy's downside.

But the smgs would have less dps and a long reload if you fire both at once.

That doesn't matter. There's a reason why even now with how heavily nerfed the GRU is, people still use it. It's mobility. Nobody would use anything else ever if that was added.
Another example is the Powerjack. There's no reason not to use it. If you don't use it you're either a bad Pyro or need to do the Hot Hand contract.

The Backscratcher beckons.
The Backscratcher beckons.
That's a really good melee if you're alone I'll give you that, but if you care about movement or want to help the team, Powerjack or Homewrecker are the only viable options.

The back scratcher is solid, works with the dragon's fury/backburner and thruster for a roaming pyro.

If it feels as good as the Opposing Force LMG, then I'm all down for this kind of weapon.
The next time the facepunch tf2 server is active, can the map be 5gorge or asteroid? Would like to play them again.
What's up with the US server? I haven't seen an announcement for a US event in months, and I can't even connect to the damn server because it's outdated.
[editline]12th January 2018[/editline]
But yeah I'd love to play some Asteroid, it's probably my favorite thing valve completely abandoned in TF2.

The EU Server has actually been playing it last week! We do weekly sessions on Saturday around roughly 8-9PM Berlin Time.
I've may have forgotten to update it and nobody else has reminded me about it.
Woops completely my bad.
As far as the US Server goes, this is entirely my bad. US Mods are supposed to run them but no one seems to be bothering with it which makes me feel bad for Kiwi as he entrusted his Server to us and we do jack shit with it - The US Mods I entrusted with doing those Sessions seem to have lost interest and I was naively hoping it would change.
I'm currently heavily considering scouting for US Mods that might be interested in starting US Sessions - so if you are interested, hit me up on Discord.

And how often do you watch 6s games? They're more likely to get mowed down in HL (see: clusterfuck of spam and damage) with the Escape Plan out, but Soldier's role in HL is much more diminished than in 6s, where the Escape Plan is the only Soldier melee worth using. It's more often I see a Soldier escape with the weapon than get mowed down in the many 6s games I've been watching, in preparation for getting a new computer and really getting in competitive.

I was on the eu server last time, but I don't remember playing asteroid, cool anyway.
Reminder that Valve once said Asteroid and Cactus Canyon are completely finished and they're just waiting for the right update.

chances are high asteroid and canyon are related to the finale of the comic and guess what the next comic is the finale
given already a year passed since its release you can expect both maps this or next year.
so basically heavy would have a much more supportive role with this shield?
what if it were to also increase sandvich recharge speed to give heavy an even larger support role while sacrificing all ranged options for defending himself?

I want glorious battle-father gameplay.
[editline]12th January 2018[/editline]
Not the Overwatch brand of "Battle Dad" where the daddery is just because you're old, I mean actual daddery. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR PACKED LUNCH, BILLY!
i want RTCW's FG-42 for heavy primary
Give heavy a Harpoon gun
Enemies hit are "pushed" towards the heavy
Its like Roadhog's hook but given its on source its even better
gives him an interesting niche with shotguns
future of comp leagues will be heavies getting harpoon med picks across the map
yknow this started as a joke idea but this would be hella rad

Give Heavy a Harpoon, release Pudge cosmetics for heavy, release a Meat hook skin for the harpoon.

That's a bit encroaching on Medic's role without having Uber, and consider how slow Heavy already is and how he'd literally be pointless in teamfights, I'd rather not.
It bugs me a bit how the top UI bar is a different color and has a different border compared to the bottom bar.

This is just speculation, valve has never said this. The most recent news we've had on asteroid is that "The maps are on hold while we work on higher priority things". There hasn't been any indication since then that valve have finished either of the maps. There's also no indication that the maps are related to the comic. Yeah there's some australium paint on a rocket ship somewhere in space, but the end of the most recent comic says that the admin is literally an hour away from death. If she had any plans to grab the space paint australium there's no reason for her to pull the stunt where she chugs the last bit she has left. I can't see any conceivable way they could tie asteroid into the comic at this point. And cactus has zero connection to the story whatsoever.

There are lots of hints through the comics that the Engineer is located in space - and in asteroid when the map ends, you literally have a space-ship fly away. I'm sure the Final comic will connect them somehow.
As far as Cactus Canyon goes, no fucking idea, but since it was developed with asteroid, we'll see.
