Are people here really taking it out on item contributors because in their eyes, the TF2 Team doesn't listen? That's really sad. Even with the wacky and goofy cosmetics, TF2 at its core is a very enjoyable game, and the dressing doll part is a plus in my book. I think that all the item contributors are amazing for giving us lots of options and choices on how to make our mercenaries look cool, menacing or cute, and I hope I'll teach myself how to make models for Source just so I can contribute to the game I love as well.
So... You're saying people are free to make these art style consistency-breaking things all they like, with the handy "blame valve if it gets accepted" card in their back pocket, so they don't have to worry about contributing to the continual leak of pyroland into the real world? I've got a lot of respect for you in particular and the modeling community, but I'm really just confused here. That thought process doesn't seem very orderly.
It's up to the people who put forth the effort time in getting good at it what they do and don't want to make. Who outside of the creator has any right to tell the artist what he or she can or cannot do? That's like making a brand wit ha huge story behind it, the first season gets popular. Then when you go to expand upon what you did you get hit by the fans telling you that it doesn't follow their "fan fiction" and they need to redo it over, insisting that you need to cater to them. The person who created it doesn't have to cater jack shit to said people, if they don't like it they can move on. Ultimately it is Valves decision to not choose these items to put into their game. If Valve would stop picking them, they would also more or less stop being made and put on the workshop altogether so it is Valve you need to direct the blame towards if you don't want to see them added to the game. Not the artists fault at all.
I suppose it would be useless to point out that those people are largely the ones who don't give a damn about the artstyle to begin with... Ah whatever. If valve, the item fans, and the contributors are fine with this sort of thing, we might as well update the promotional and box art to something the game more accurately resembles, because the in-game visual theme is now no longer what's being advertised. Slap some unicorns and rainbows on the meet the team videos and store images and see how that affects player counts.
Tell me something, from a business perspective when is it a good idea to pick what the minority wants over the majority? At least without a good reason to push it, this being in regards to balance changes should be taking competitive feed back more then casual feed back. Because they can actually provide useful reasoning as to why something is broken, needs to be nerfed, needs to be buffed, ect. The "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist" crowd needs to hurry up and die off if you ask me though. If you really want more fitting cosmetics you should in return make them yourself and push for them to be added to the game would be my advice.
Slap some unicorns and rainbows on the meet the team videos and store images and see how that affects player counts.
imagine if they did that to meet the pyro, the game would surely be dead haha
Not only that but a BIG portion of TF2's playerbase is either meme spouting idiots, furries, people below the age of 14, and others. And those are the people who eat these items up. And probably praise these items. So in the end, probably the majority of the community couldn't give a shit about the items, or actually love them.
or some people are just average folks who like silly stuff and you dont have to be a social or sexual deviant to enjoy goofy concepts?
Fine, I'll shut up about the art style and theme since it seems like I'm literally the only one who holds the wildly unpopular opinion that while they shouldnt stop being made or be removed, pyroland items should be kept in pyroland for the sake of a consistent visual experience.
or some people are just average folks who like silly stuff and you dont have to be a social or sexual deviant to enjoy goofy concepts?
Oh no I'm not saying that but I'm saying those are the folks who would literally seek after those items no matter what. I love the silly items too. I mean, look at my avatar dammit.
remember when wearing a furcoat of a dead animal was considered badass instead of "OwO furry xD"
The "I don't like it so it shouldn't exist" crowd needs to hurry up and die off if you ask me though.
The irony of this statement. There are legitimate arguments for saying something shouldn't have existed/happened, though I will say that it's far too late to do anything about it in this case.
remember when wearing a furcoat of a dead animal was considered badass instead of "OwO furry xD"
I don't know of any furries who thinks so, though. The Head Prize, however...

tf2's artstyle isn't "dead" imo, i think the zany hats fit well with the already crazy tf2 universe. sure a bunch of them make no sense in the slightest but this comes from a game with a universe where Australia is basically 100 years into the future compared to the rest of the earth and there are humanoid robots that run on money because fuck it why not. plus the individual cosmetics give every player their own personality and can sometimes let you know how they play sometimes. if contributors were forced to make things for the game with very, VERY specific guidelines, making stuff would likely be the hardest thing without the ability to get creative.
Do you still have hope that anything will change since my post arguing with you that we can't do anything about this? Valve doesn't care neither do hat creators. It's a lost battle already.
I prefer to showcase my criticism over rolling over and exposing my belly, regardless of the fact valve will never learn. I'd rather be an idiot with a voice than a bystander.
From what I am reading over and over in this forum is that some are displeased with what item contributors are releasing to the workshop and are getting mad that we made them when its not our choice if valve added our stuff. In this last update I just got my first self made after working my butt off for over a year and sure I make some pretty dumb stuff but for this Smissmas I made 4 items 3 of them were pretty good for "art style" while 1 was the Pocket Yeti that got in. I made this item in hopes it would get in because of a meme and added as many people who would be willing to help me on it because I thought it wouldn't get in compared to my other things. Don't get me wrong I am happy valve picked my pocket yeti but to hear people complain about what gets added.... just remember people spend A LOT of time on most of their submissions and might have to go though hardships at home while making said items so to insult a creator after they just won the valve selection lottery is really disgusting in my eyes and if you all think that the art style is so tainted now go ahead and make items yourself and realize what we all go though to get something in.
valve isnt gonna stop adding items that generate ca$$$h just because you dont like it. the most you can hope for is a 2007vision goggles but I wouldnt count on it
Actually, some items DO break the artstyle. First, the color scheme is a part of the artstyle, and some cosmetics do break that with their brighter colors. Secondly, some items are much more detailed. Compare the Scattergun to the Backscatter. Edit: Not shitting on the contributors. Just saying the fact.
backseat workshoppers

I seriously doubt anyone dislikes the pocket yeti. It's a cute, well made pocket buddy, that isn't visually jarring or out of place and has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Good job on getting it in, too! What people ARE complaining about is the proliferation of pyroland items outside pyroland, not insulting the creators for poor craftsmanship. All valve would have to do is keep those things within pyroland, and I basically guarantee you these complaints go away, and people can make all the pastel unicorn stuff they like, a lot of which has some excellent effort put into it.
telling workshoppers not to make certain items is worse than going into their steam messages and blowing them up with your (not) epic new hat idea with dozens of google image search references
telling workshoppers not to make certain items is worse than going into their steam messages and blowing them up with your (not) epic new hat idea with dozens of google image search references
Who's saying that, tho?
tbh i dislike the "pocket X" trend. "pocket medic" works because of the pun in the name, but having 20 items in game named "pocket X" is just uncreative. Why not use "Adorable Snowman" like its called in the workshop description? Why "Pocket Santa" when you could use "Lil' St. Nick?" Also i thought demo already had a bagpipe cosmetic either on its own or as part of another cosmetic. Not saying the one in this update shouldn't've be added, but i wanted to compare the date it was added as this update's was submitted in 2012.
And despite all the pocket items, there still isn't a Pocket Soldier or Demo even though they're primary healing targets for Med players
probably cause it wouldnt work as an all/multi class item, unlike a generic npc character or reference which "fits" each class and would be more popular to unboxers.
And despite all the pocket items, there still isn't a Pocket Soldier or Demo even though they're primary healing targets for Med players
Ill be frank with you: Pocket Items would be the Nr.1 bad cosmetic type if it wasnt for medals.
tf2 is cool
People need to learn not to take people disliking their work as some kind of personal insult.
I finally my Festive Aussie Tomislav. I was questioning doing it at first but it looks p gud. Though I feel weird looking at it in first person. Will probably get used to it.

Question tho (Sorry if it's a stupid one): Do you think that this whole Festivizer thing is a bug from the TF team or nah?
Question tho (Sorry if it's a stupid one): Do you think that this whole Festivizer thing is a bug from the TF team or nah?
It seems like they would've reverted it quite quickly if it was the case, because economy and all.
