thats because ballonicorn/pyroland is really popular outside the fanbase. even i have a plushie of
ballonicorn that someone made for me ages ago. thing is, oversaturated? hardly. we already went past the 1000 cosmetics marks and these are now even affected by the artificial rarity so its even harder for anyone willing to use them to actually use them.
the art direction of the game is still intact. what truly kills is is stuff like lime paints and those half assed realistic textures in game banana. other than that, the game is composed of multitude of elements that "define" it. cosmetics are still following the art direction the game used to create everything else so they still blend with everything else because the community learned about it by studying it.
People are mad about another balloonicorn item? What planet do you live on? There's plenty of shit that I hate in TF2 (and shit even in this update I detest) but I don't post about it because I just don't pay attention to it.
If anything I love balloonicorn shit more because I know it annoys people like that.
tbh, i wouldn't care that much about cosmetics, i see artstyle or theme dying as a side issue, first we should focus on gameplay issues, and once they balance out some more stuff, improve casual and overhaul mm, then we can start really pushing for better items in the cases that they release

Valve and TF2 is the definition of throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Balloonicorn is not sticking but they keep picking it back up and throwing it at the wall.

If it had a reason to be in the game, like Miss Pauling has been in the shorts and Yeti was like the main... thing Valve added in JI. So, because of that there is a pocket Pauling and a pocket yeti.
Balloonicorn? The last time I saw balloonicorn being relevant was years ago but they keep bringing it back up in the form of random high tier cosmetics and nothing else.

The pass is on sale for 4.49 US, for the holiday sale, I'll probably buy it soon, but the defense contracts are said to be really annoying.
edit: passes for tf2 and csgo campaigns/operations go 50% off a month or two before it ends, so you could get it cheaper if you wait a bit. Although it ends in February, so it might not go on sale so soon after the winter sale.

It's extremely hard to get a CSGO skin to get accepted, there's millions of them. Besides, they release a new case like every 5 months now.
