i just mean it probably helped them hit gold last year
The captcha in the Steam registration page needs to be updated to be more modern.
That actually took me by surprise; 2016 was a worse year than 2017 for TF2 given it literally had no content whatsoever apart from "Competitive" and the entire casual rework that flopped massively. I'd have expected a new Campaign alongside the Case rework and War Paint rework to net Valve more money but I think part of the reason why it didnt manage Gold was because they skipped Halloween Cases + the reasons the others have said. Maybe that "double unusual" rate thing from back then really did do wonders for that year.
2015 ended with Tough Break, an actual winter major update, going right into 2016 on a good note.
2015 ended with Tough Break, an actual winter major update, going right into 2016 on a good note.
I completely forgot about that! That must've been what caused the influx of revenue. As a side note, in roughly 9 days itll be 1 year since the last comic.
I completely forgot about that! That must've been what caused the influx of revenue. As a side note, in roughly 9 days itll be 1 year since the last comic.
Already?? Holy shit. We must really be merged with Valve time.
Eh, I have 30 keys spare from a trade I did earlier. And there isn't many unusuals I'd want at that range. Fuck it. :v:

Sell them on the market, get $60, buy a load of games. Don't throw it all into the fires of RNG.

I'd suggest doing this, because I made a mistake of not quitting earlier. On my first ever exchange on my new account, I spent $5 for two keys, and got an $80 unusual taunt (high-five), sold it immediately. Bought keys for war paints/seasonal cosmetics, got a few rare items that I sold for ($70, $23, $25, $7, $5), went on a rampaging gambling spree, lost $100 in real currency from gambling with keys. Please understand the value of the dollar--Losing $100 from your bank sucks, and it hurts you more than you think. Now I have like a $400 unusual on my hands but still, real currency for fun-bucks sucks. Though if I may suggest on what you should get, the Valve Collection is only 16 bucks, get that if you haven't already.
Screw that stuff, here is a better idea. Add me on steam. Then trade me keys, in exchange for nothing. If you are lucky, I will trade you back some random item later on. It's just like unboxing, except I get the keys instead of them disappearing and the trash you get is more varied. [editline]1st January 2018[/editline] Hell, after like 10 keys I can guarantee that I'll get you a shitty unusual you don't want. That's like 90% better than valve's unboxing.
I think I got enough TF stuff for now.
Where's QWTF, sonny jim?
TF2 dropped from the gold to the silver tier this year in top revenue earners on Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/2017_best_sellers/
I know it sucks to see it dip down, but the fact a f2p game that only got basically 1 content update this year still managed to beat out/be on par with a 2 million selling game like cuphead still says a lot about TF2's potential
CS:GO and Dota 2 are both in platinum, and people still try to argue that valve wouldn't gain anything from trying to grow the competitive scene
That is a huge jump to make, you don't have any proof that they sell so much because they're competitive except "they sell more than TF2". I'm not opposed to growing TF2's competitive scene, but you realize CS:GO and DOTA are two of the biggest games in their PC genres and in the world, right? The only other MOBA that competes with DOTA is League, and CS:GO has no realistic competition, but Overwatch is still a huge competitor for TF2, flaws and all, and unlike DOTA and CS:GO, TF2 is almost 11 years old, poorly optimized, and the black sheep of Valve's maintained games. And even if/when the competitive scene for TF2 grows, how do we know for sure it'll be successful? Even with all the money Valve has, they'd still have to invest a lot to hold official tournaments. It may not be an investment they want to risk for, again, an almost 11 year old game that seemingly very few people want to work on.

There are explicit spikes in their popularity relative to their spikes in competitive popularity. CS was nowhere near the homename it is now until CS:GO came with competitive backing. League is a huge competitor to dota. There are plenty of smaller mobas like HOTS too. CS:GO has plenty of competitors in genre, but it is the definitive 'basic shooter' esport as opposed to something like COD.
how do we know for sure it'll be successful?
Because it's a fun esport, to watch and play. and Valve isn't an indie company, they have the funds and manpower to make is successful.
It may not be an investment they want to risk for, again, an almost 11 year old game that seemingly very few people want to work on.
This is not the reason they avoid it. making tf2 comp is not at all a risk for them. The amount of money it would take for them to organize a tournament is pocket change to them. The problem is that valve only works on what they're interested in, and currently there's less than 5 valve employees interested in competitive tf2.
What the hell is wrong with the Scottish Resistance? The outline of the stickies disappears behind walls for me, when they should glow across the map. The wiki says it's a rare bug; but my settings are default, and I can't get any fix to work (changing DirectX, disabling anti-aliasing...).
I mean did they seriously expect the cheat's creators, the people who are fooling their complex anti-cheat system for a while now, to not go around a simple filter for the name catbot? It's like if the police started a manhunt for anyone who wears a tshirt saying: "I kidnap and sell people".
One of the most ridiculously terrifying anti-cheat stories I think I've ever heard, was back in the day when halo 3 was popular. A Russian 19 year old and his cousin had become one of the largest cheat devs in the east, and it became such a problem that the users got fed up, banded together, doxxed the guy, and the kids at his primary school ended up breaking into his house, smashing the one guy's computer and drives, and then stomping his cousin's ass until he was a weeping, traumatized mess. Cheating in that game was down for a while after this, gaming forums noted. While obviously illegal and the hoodlums were rightfully given juvenile prison terms, this sort of thing is still happens in other countries, even as recently as PUBG.

Technically they should be an exception, but the TF2 Team has probably forgotten - moreso considering how players with glows are rendered anywhere from the map, no matter if you're in the same section as them or not. It should be a 2 minute fix, but if you want it higher up in their fix list, you better make a submission on /r/tf2 and have it manage to get 2000 upvotes.
Where's QWTF, sonny jim?
i aint got it. it's a mod of another game so i'm not bothering for now.

Valve won't hire people, so why not let anyone who wants to submit fixes for bugs and new features?
I can't deal with the Dragon's Fury. Bursting into flames once is bad enough, rapid fire just makes me panic.
I can't deal with the Dragon's Fury. Bursting into flames once is bad enough, rapid fire just makes me panic.
you haven't seen a good phlog player then. JI made the thing ridiculous
you haven't seen a good phlog player then. JI made the thing ridiculous
Using this opportunity to bring back my vid: For those that don't want to watch: binding your mousewheel scrolling to primary fire and using that to fire the phlog greatly decreases ammo used and makes the particles almost invisible.
In regards to the previous discussion about the games growth... I think Valve just needs to revamp TF2 somehow. I heard porting to Source2 was a no-go, even though I wish it was something they'd do. Updates can only go so far as to keep its current playerbase and get some of the playerbase coming back (but even that crowd will probably just stay for the update and leave again once they've had their fill). Bringing in a large sum of new players is what TF2 needs, but I wouldn't know how to achieve that. The only way I can think of is to make a whole new Team Fortress game, but that will completely kill the entire current playerbase from moving over, since everyone would lose their items and progress on their strange weapons/hats etc... People have put so much time and money into TF2 that creating a new TF is also a no-go. If you say then port those items over ... well then that's just porting it to Source2 or something. I think what makes it hard for TF2 to gain a large new influx of players is that you can't really advertise a 10 year old game anymore. People just aren't interested or they'll be confused. You can advertise all the big updates you want, but people who don't know the game won't know why the updates are so special, so it'll struggle to draw them in. I think that's just it, it's 10 years old, still an AMAZING game, but how do you advertise such a thing now? IMO porting to Source2 or doing something to revamp TF2 with new graphics/mechanics then advertising THAT like crazy is the only way to go. Revamp it then make a new trailer based on it, using typical advertising buzzwords like NEW AND IMPROVED, that'll draw people in. Most people when browsing the store aren't looking for a 10 year old product despite still being good, customers want the newest thing on the block. This is proof with the COD and BF franchise, they throw out a new title every year and people just eat it up, doesn't matter if the previous title was still good, they'll go out and buy the new one. TF2 needs to be re-done somehow and then THAT has to be advertised ... advertising what we currently have will do no good. It's the same as browsing the stores at the mall in real life, people aren't browsing the store for a decade old product.
Or you know, they could unfuck the things we've been complaining about for seven or so years. -Lousy anti cheat/antiquated report and votekick system -Random Crits -No team balance/scrambling after rage quitting rolls -No ad hoc joining with the server browser. -No class/team composition reminders or warnings like modem games have. These are not new ideas. Some of them have been suggested for longer than other games have been in development, and valve has done absolutely squat. That's why the game could be doing so much better. Valve is asleep at the wheel.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tf2/comments/7ni2rp/the_new_flame_particles_are_a_blessing/ This is why I pretty much envy this class now. Instead of making Pyro not a w+m1 class Valve made it purely w+m1 class. It's fun to get killed by a dead pyro while you have 50 hp.

I wish Heavy won instead of Pyro. Maybe we would not be dealing with this retardation now.
Team comp reminders do absolutely nothing because in the end everyone just wants to play their mains or refuse to listen to others, just look at MvM or Overwatch.
Team comp reminders do absolutely nothing because in the end everyone just wants to play their mains or refuse to listen to others, just look at MvM or Overwatch.
MvM is alright if you play with the right people. I've been playing with randoms alot, didn't run into any problems so far.
Team comp reminders do absolutely nothing because in the end everyone just wants to play their mains or refuse to listen to others, just look at MvM or Overwatch.
i mean the problem with mvm is people refuse not to adhere to an average baked meta, not the opposite. double/triple power classes are often the easiest, smoothest games I had.
MvM is alright if you play with the right people. Hatless engineers building near the bomb drop location, a hatless sniper using a huntsman with no upgrades, etc. Hell we even got a tour 1000 guy who was super meta to the point where he ragequit after seeing we failed once halfway through a mission. He also said "Pyro change to demoman or else I'm not moving from spawn" when Pyro's gas can can do Demoman's job..

Me and my friend play mvm, It takes like 3 power classes to carry the game, doesn't really matter what the rest are playing as long as you have a Heavy, Demo, Scout and a Dispenser. Are you playing Two Cities?
