I don't think this is uncommon to mod development. I worked on some mods and contributed with a lot of machinima makes over the last 10 years and I rarely had any oversight of the status nor access to a proper build. In the end it always came down to 2 or 3 guys who not only did the most work and had the vision of the product, these guys were also very close to each other.
Unlike real game development (or organized mod development), you have a shitload of people, you forget half of these guys even exist, you loose track of where all the assets are coming from, some disappear without any trace, others never say a word but upload their files from time to time.

You're directing these questions at the wrong person. The way this mod was developed was in a way that was intentionally fractured and isolated. The people who came on to make maps didn't get to talk to any modelers or texture artists. The texture artists didn't get to talk to the modelers. The modelers didn't get to talk to the animators. The animators didn't get to talk to anybody making maps. The list goes on and on.
throwaway10 is not the first "insider" I've heard making these claims. Nobody really had any idea that stuff was stolen, and those that suspected it were all told the same thing by Berkan: "it's placeholder materials." This mod was built using a mish mash of half and full baked ideas from a wide variety of people. I don't think there was a single "dedicated" member of their staff other than Berkan himself and maybe a couple others. The team that started on this 2 years ago is a completely different group of people now. Stuff was made by bringing in more people to work on the stuff the previous members made. Then they'd leave. Then more would be brought in to continue the cycle. There's no cohesion anywhere in this mod.

I have to be blunt here: I, and many other devs, did not disrespect Half Life 2. This statement is unfair due to the fact we had no control or insight in which direction the project was going to.
Hunt Down The Freeman was shrouded in secrecy from the beginning, and as some of you might realize, most of us are as shocked as all of HL fans. This project was meant to be more, but now it's a big pile of steaming shit.

Considering the development "process" they had, it's not too surprising. Only a few people had access to everything. The rest only had their own work which they didn't have to show others. If those few didn't notice it, there was nothing stopping stolen assets from making it in.

Also I googled what a Rudius is. It's a wooden sword given to gladiators as a evidence of honorable discharge. (i.e. gladiator gets to go a free man.)

Fucks sake, GSC is one of the few cool companies who gave explicit permission to let others use their assets in other games and mods and as long as they are free. And this is what they get in return.

I thought I might ask this as well since I'm genuinely curious, but while I'm glad to see someone on the dev team take the initiative to actually talk to us in spite of the massive shitstorm brewing regarding this game(mad respect for that btw), how come none of the other devs/mods are willing to say anything and are just keeping quiet? Is it because Frank made them sign a NDA or something, or are they this overwhelmed by the backlash?
I'm watching a friend play through this and it is just the gift that keeps on giving, the most challenging part so far is trying to figure out how to turn the flashlight on.

I imagine staying quiet is the best thing you can do. Being associated with this game might have bad consequences if you are looking for a job in game industry due to usage of a stolen content. And no one want to admit they worked for free with a promise of payment when the game gets released.
